Hello friends,
I just wanted to share my recent experience with getting a repair done on M/V No Plans (1965 Tollycraft Voyager 27).
In early August during the extreme tides I made an error in judgement and ended up a little too close to the windward side of Blake Island. The combination of the super low tide, the brisk winds and a momentary lapse in attention put us on a rock. I managed to kedge her off and determined we had no hull damage. Since the boat was tight and dry I decided to check the mechanicals. She started right up but vibrated fiercely when I got her going.
We managed to limp back to Port Orchard at about 5 knots.
Once I got over being embarassed I contacted a local shop and was quoted nearly $1500 just for a haulout and inspection. I was floored and seriously depressed. Retirement is nice but big expenses are hard on the budget. I checked around and found an old guy at a parts shop that suggested getting a diver to do the inspection. i contacted all the divers he gave me but only got a call back from one: Daves. I had a great conversation with Michelle and she got me set up for a dive on the boat later that week.
I met the diver and he got right to work. He took about 10 minutes to inspect the hull and gave me a thumbs up on it. He said the prop was seriously bent and the bottom needed to be cleaned. He then said he could pull the prop and clean the hull right then. I asked if he had any recommendations about where to take it and he explained that the charge for pulling the prop INCLUDED taking it to Tacoma Propellor and re-installing it! Total charge for all of that was $187! He also cleaned the bottom in short order and charged $136 for that service. I was delighted.
Daves did take the prop to Tacoma Propellor. I spoke with Charlie there and he said it was probably a replacement because it didnt match the original specs. He also said that while he could fix the prop it would always vibrate a little. We chatted and finally decided to go with a slightly different prop that was a closer match to the original specs. Daves picked up the new prop and reinstalled it. The final bill for the dive which included the inspection, pulling the old prop, taking it to Tacoma Prop, picking up the new one, reinstalling the new prop and cleaning the bottom was less than $400. (The cost of the new prop, Michigan 14LH9, was the price of a small car but the less said about that the better...)
I took my Tolly out the next day and I was thrilled! Everything was great and she made nearly 20 knots!
Anyway, I highly recommend Daves Dive Services to everyone.
