Today's the day - Bilbo's birthday, Frodo's birthday and the beginning
of the Quest. Happy birthday, Bilbo and Frodo, wherever you may be.

Today....? Oh and I do so feel like just a little adventure too Ted......er not a very big one at all mind you..........we do not want to have the Chinese curse of may you live in interesting times do we?
But yes a small, one now and again is luvely.....so longa s you can go back home..to either loved ones or something approximating that......after all East West home is best.....or Ted........... should that be West East, home is the thing that hurts the least!

A big road, a small adventure.

I once lived a' deux
But it just would not do.
So then I walked alone,
And only my non sacred
Muse, kept me from
Chilling to the bone.
I tried living in Alte Mohabit
And in Gynnedd in North Wales,
In a not so quiet village, by
Name of Beddgelert as well.
I had a few adventures
Small, but large enough to tell.
Like some second-hand
Ulysses on that wine dark foam
I traveled, versed and roamed
And finally my own Penelope
At last gave up on me.
Ah but that too was fair enough
And now I stay, abandoning myth,
All alone in my very own Ithica.
Aging not so very gracefully.

His sweet West Brunswick home

I read that several times, Jeff, and I'm just a bit bemused. I,
however, do not want an "adventure" a la Frodo and Sam. Nor do I want
to be waiting for Michael like Vladimir and Estragon were waiting for
Godot. Anyway I hope to see you on Friday am. I'm aiming to catch a
train that leaves Blackheath at 6.27 and gets to Redfern at 8.42.Look
for me in Science Road about 9.

Can you find the Great Hall? Science Road runs along the Parramatta
Road side of the Great Hall. If you go West (I think it's West - away
from the city) and keep walking until the Wallace Theatre is on your
left, you've gone a little too far. Turn around and the first building
on your right is the Woolley building. Failing that go to www.usyd.edu.au
and look for a map. I'll try to get you more particulars tonight.

This should show you a map of the University's main campus. Look near
the top for "SCIENCE ROAD". If you look carefully to either side of it
you should see near the left hand end and "below" it, a building
marked "John Woolley". That's it. A little bit to the left of that you
should see "Wallace Theatre" I must admit the letters are small, but I
can't do any better. As a last resort: ask anyone you see in the
university grounds where the Woolley building is. Or look at that map
for "main quad". On the surrounding buildings is an "i" sign - an
information office one would presume.

For good measure I have posted this here too.

Gentlemen!

I am returned.

Unfortunately, I will probably miss Ted's talk as I have to attend a
case at Concord in the morning. However, after that I will be free
and
can meet up with you guys. If time is kind to me (if the surgeon is
quick!) I may yet make the talk. This is my aim.

I will make my way over to you as soon as I can.

Will any of you have a mobile phone on your person?

Mine is 0406420751.

I suggest you don't bother, Michael. The organisers will want $70 from
you, and you won't get much unless you arrive before lunch. We can
meet elsewhere later.

I have the number Ted. What time do you reckon you will be done with
lunch? If I miss the talk time I'll just show up when you two are
ready. Maybe we can go somewhere for a drink as you are not likely to
be hungry.....I might be though.

If I do miss you beforehand best of luck with the talk. I look forward
to hearing about it tomorrow.

Pity hopes that we could all get together didn't pan out .. well also
those of us who had to work on the friday.

If one of those fortunate enuf to attend to seminar/conference/wotevea
would like to write a review for Tilkal, that'd be wonderful. No offence
Jeff, but I'd like to see someone other than you do it - because
everything I have in the pile for the next issue is by you. But if
no-one else is willing and/or able to do the job, then feel free!!!

And a note to everyone ... it's your eZine .. send something in!!!!
ANYTHING!!!! It doesn't have to be Tolkien related. Doesn't even have to
be fantasy or even fiction. And it can be anything that's in electronic
form or can be converted into an electronic form. If someone wants to
submit a piece of recorded music for inclusion in the next issue, send
an mp3 (or whatever). As long as you're a member of TH, you can submit
anything. Non-members can also submit stuff or have it submitted on
their behalf, however inclusion there is dependent on a number of
factors (free space, nature of the submission etc - preferably at least
Tolkien or fantasy).

cheers,

I can't work out why it would do that (the email be rejected). When you
reply to my post to the list your reply is going to the list and then to
me, not to me directly. Unless you were trying to email me directly?

I did get the text of your paper that was posted to the list a few days

there something else???

Enjoy the warm weather, Jeff. I shall have to read your book from the
computer screen - it's a bit too long to print, given the cost of
running an inkjet printer. However I don't see reading from the screen
as a problem.

Oh, btw, I already have a title for a paper, should Michael go ahead

Oh also btw, Ros is digesting the notion of going to Melbourne to see

I'm reading! However, may I make one remark - it doesn't move fast
enough off the blocks. I don't insist on a full blown disaster or
fight in the second paragraph, but you do need some sort of a hook in
the first few pages. Now Frederick Forsyth's book "The Dogs of War" is
a good example of how to get the action going in the prologue, while
still giving quick bios of the principal characters. May I suggest
that you get straight to the point on page 1, then drop the bios in by
degrees where they can be fitted without tying up the action. Note:
I've only read about the first ten pages, and glanced over the rest,
noting that plenty of action seems to come along in due course.
However, if you want an editor to read it, imho you need something to
keep him/her interested.

Robert Louis Stevenson's epitaph? Home is the sailor?? The wide and
starry sky - yes.

Don't think there're any of that variety left in Oz ... they all joined
the Uniting church.

I'm here ... honest. Either that or this is a figment of your
imagination. :)

Replying to David. I tried to do that and again Google wouldn't post
the reply.

Are you sure? The Unitarians aren't Christian. There was a Unitarian
Church near the Australian Museum.

You mean replying to me? This makes no sense at all ... you are
replying to the list, not to me!!

Could you email a copy of the exact error message to the list (not to
me) .. maybe that'll shed some light. No-one else is having that
problem, so it seems something strange at your end???????????

They are ... they date back to the early 1700's in england. Now part
of the uniting church

David - I tried to reply to your post, not personally to you but to
the list. It was rejected.

What was the error message?

This is weird! Replying to the list it should make no difference at all
who you are replying to since you are replying to the list not an
individual.

Is anyone else getting rejected posts to the list? Rejected, not "gone
missing"?

David

Makes no sense to me either, but if I reply to you the message is "not
sent", though replies to others, including myself, seem to get
through.

Yes. I'll do a message specifically for that after I've done this one.

I've just recalled - yes, the Unitarian movement was Christian
originally, but they've grown into what in the USA is called UU which
I think stands for Unitarian Universalist, and afaik that is not
Christian. Indeed I have some talks on tape by one of their clergy and
what he says makes it quite clear he is not Christian. Just what the
Sydney Unitarian church was like I never found out.

The message that I get whenever I try to post a reply to David is

If one follows that up one finds that they won't help except under
certain circumstances, and mine aren't among them.

Anything can become a cult, especially in the USA. :)

The unitarians here were pretty mainstream ... Cynthia's parents were
married in the unitarian church at mascot ... now uniting.

As a PS to this ...

I'm getting email from other gmail accounts, so it's not that gmail
doesn't like my address - either cuz it's blocked cuz of a word trigger
(likely "root") or cuz I use a floating IP mail server.

Getting desperate .. ASSUMING NO ONE ELSE HAS PROBLEMS REPLYING TO MY
POSTS HERE AND I CAN ONLY SPEAK FOR JEFF THERE .. the only thing I can
think of is that when you hit reply, your email software is replacing my
email address with an old address of mine and the list is rejecting it
.. no, that'd not work ... it'd only reject it if your address wasn't
valid. As far as the list is concerned, it is irrelevant who'se post you
are replying to since the correspondence is between you and the list,
which makes it bewildering that you can reply to others but not me.
There's just no obvious reason.

Well when you reply to me, reply to both the list and directly to me ..
that way at least I will get the reply.

cheers,
David

Tried several more times to reply to "Marayong" and "David Powell", in
the list (not personally). Always the post is not sent.
