The two "major days" in LotR are of course 22 September and 25 March.
On 22 September TA 3001, Bilbo turned 111 and Frodo 31. Bilbo gave
Frodo the One Ring - a poisoned chalice gift if ever there was one,
although Bilbo presumably had no idea of that. On 25 March TA 3019 the
One Ring was finally destroyed. Seventeen and a half years, but the
Quest occupied only the last six months.

I haven't anything of special importance to add now. We have in the
past discussed the fact that 25 March is celebrated in the Roman
Catholic Church as the Feast of the Annunciation, and if you have any
favourite versions of the Magnificat (eg Bach's Magnificat in D) you
might like to play them. Not into Medieval, Renaissance or Baroque
music? Oh well ...

I was hoping to post today about a real life Quest, the tale of which
I had never heard until recently. It's interesting to compare this
with the Ring Quest or other Quests in fantasy. This Quest did have
some parallels with the Ring Quest in that people - ordinary people in
their way - undertook great and dangerous tasks to save the lives of
others, although their own lives had not been threatened (nor was the
end of civilisation - there was no "Dark Lord" that threatened to take
over the world, but the "force of evil" was dark enough), and more
than one "kind" worked side by side under extreme conditions. I here
refer to Men, Elves, Dwarves and Hobbits in LotR. In the real life
story there were just two "kinds". men and ... Unfortunately, real
life is not as "pure" as fantasy tends to be, and some of the events
were, I think, too "messy" to ever make it into fantasies. Indeed, it
is the fact that it is "real life" that makes the story so compelling.

There is a book. I will endeavour to read it soon. Then all will be
revealed. However, if you know, or think you know, what I'm referring
to, then feel free to post.

While JRRT was a devout Catholic, I have a suspicion that March 25th
was more symbolical to Tolkien because it coincided with the vernal
equinox, and at one point in our history, the beginning of a New
Year.

As for the 'real life' story, I have no clue. I am intrigued though.

Hi Michael,

True, and 22 September is the (northern hemisphere) autumnal equinox,
or close to it. I did note the fact that 25 March was the first day of
the year until the adoption of the Gregorian calendar. However there
is definitely some symbolic resemblance between the Annunciation and
the destruction of the Ruling Ring.

Regarding the real life "quest", I still haven't got "The Book" but I
might acquire it tomorrow. Two weeks ago I had a palm spike removed
from my finger. It was done by a specialist hand surgeon at Kareena (a
RHS hospital at Miranda. You probably know it well. I couldn't wait
for a public hospital operating theatre to be available and I'm fairly
well covered by MBF insurance). I have an appointment to see him
tomorrow at his Miranda rooms. His name is Dr Stuart Myers and he is
with Sydney Orthopedic Specialists. With a bit of luck I may be able
to get to Angus and Robertson or Dymocks in the city.

Thanks for the empathy. The finger, though the splinter penetrated the
bone, is now well on the mend. Indeed I saw the surgeon last Friday
and he removed the stitches. I can now get it wet with no fear of
infection (but I still need to keep it covered).
