First make sure you have installed the right opkg packages. Mine works with opkg install kmod-usb-core kmod-nls-base kmod-usb-net kmod-usb-net-cdc-ether kmod-usb-net-rndis kmod-usb-ohci kmod-usb-uhci kmod-usb2 usb-modeswitch kmod-usb-net-asix-ax88179, but I am not sure all the packages are needed, and you will at least have to switch kmod-usb-net-assix-ax88179 to the package that matches your adapters chipset.

All I can google about it was the adapter base driver. I get over DM9601. After a quick search in LUCI>software , I found the kmod module. In description was mention DM9601. Install and work.
I know is a cheap thing, but is just part of a prototype.

I just needed a simple USB to Ethernet adapter for testing. It does not need to be fast, it does not need to reach USB 3.0 speeds or gigabit speeds. I own two other USB ethernet adapters that have various reliability issues so I got a random cheap one from ebay.

This is one of those annoying features where USB dongles will present a CD drive with drivers to windows to make them work, ignoring that this is just an rndis device that has worked without special drivers for decades. This wouldn't be problematic if it exposed both the ethernet interface and the driver CD at the same time so I could just ignore it.

I was ready to add this adapter to the e-waste problem but then I thought about how this would be handled from the manufacturing side. The chip is generic but those driver installers are usually branded. There needs to be somewhere to actually store the drivers on the device...

Inside the adapter is a simple PCB that has a crystal and the USB ethernet module. This particular adapter contains a CoreChips SR9700 single-chip ethernet controller. Doing anything interesting with this would be hard, there's not really public documentation for this chip except for the pin descriptions. The SR9900 datasheet mentions some internal one-time programmable memory, but it being one-time programmable does not really help me.

Gently open the box where the ethernet cable is plugged in and check the id above the chip. Search and download proper drivers from the manufacturer and enable it. There another collection of generic drivers available for this kind of device in this link.

Great post, thanks a lot.
I had to walk through the last step and downloaded the driver for my MacBook Pro (late 2012) with High Sierra for AX88772B (in Goobay product USB 2.0 fast ethernet network converter, b.t.w. it says in system overview it is/has USB 3.0 bus) at =105&sub=driverdetail
And it works!!! ?

Another common chip type in cheap USB Ethernet adapters is RealTek RTL815x. I had a spesific use case: the Ethernet port was dead in my old Mac (OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard), and I needed more USB ports. On the Mac, some information about the chips may be found with System Profiler, item USB. My adapter is LENTION 3 USB Port Hub + RJ45 Lan Adapter (USB 2.0 and Ethernet 10/100). The driver RealTek provides now (2019) is RTUNICv1.0.17. It does not work with Snow Leopard and/or chips in the adapter. An older version of RealTek driver is found and it works with Snow Leopard and the chips in the adapter, namely RTUNICv1.0.10 and v1.0.11
