Hi all,

I am writing this, hoping that you take a broad sense of the word ‘hacker’: I want to contact the owners of four Japanese pleasure craft.

According to https://www.marinevesseltraffic.com/SOUTH-PACIFIC-OCEAN/ship-traffic-tracker, these are currently harboured in Guam:

1.       NO.8KEIHOUMARU (MMSI 431680190)

2.       NO.5YUSEIMARU (MMSI 431680580)

3.       HOUTOKUMARU (MMSI 431680480)

4.       NO.35YOUKOUMARU (MMSI 431680620)

The tracking feature indicates that three of them arrived from the south.

I’m trying to get into Japan to see my sons this summer.  As a non-resident foreign national, I seem only able to do so by not being in any country with direct flights to Japan in the 14 days prior to arrival – leaving me looking for two week sea voyages in.

www.classnk.com doesn’t let me search by MMSI number.  Searching by name finds me a HOUTOKU MARU (IMO No.: 9362906), but it’s a 165m vehicle carrier currently in Chiba.  Thus, I wonder if those in Guam are too small to be in ClassNK.

Any suggestions would be very appreciated!

ありがとう,

Hi Colin,

That will really be a wild attempt! I would say that you should have
better chances if you contact an Japanese embassy in the country you
are resident and provide an explanation what and why you need to
travel to Japan.

Make sure you have a plan, you might need to be in quarantine (2
weeks) in one place and seek some support from the other parent
(assuming she is in Japan).
Try to get some written documents that you can show at the
immigration. Who you are, where are your sons, etc.
You'll probably need to provide a recent PCR test.

That's the official page, they say only whatever-residents may be
treated as "persons in special circumstances" but try to clarify that
with an embassy:

I am a permanent resident, though I have been away since last November
and I am also waiting for a good time to go to Tokyo on some business.

Good luck!
Kalin.

Thanks very much Kalin!

Yes, I'm in touch with the Japanese embassy in London (where I live).  I'm writing to the Consulate in Guam as well, asking if they might now how to get in touch with the vessel owners.

Best wishes with your travels as well,

Colin

Update: the four Japanese ships are fishing vessels, according to one of the dive operators in Guam.
