Hi,
on my daily Akiba-stalking tour, I came across a blog post on freaklabs.

First of all, I figured out Akiba has a sister and that she is more
pretty then him (ok given this is not really difficult ;) ).
But what I really found interesting is the discussion about mothers
and hackerspaces which ended up in this

http://mothership.hackermoms.org/

a hackerspace with childcare service esp. designed for mothers.
I find this freaking cool. Guess there was/is not much awareness of
this. Maybe THS could consider how to work together resp. support them
(was there not a bunch of unused soldering stations?).

I know THS is knee-deep in moving, fund-raising, etc.
However, as a long term perspective, I would love to see a child care
service for at least the Tuesday meetings (or a weekly special
with-kids meeting). This would allow both parents to participate as
THS members and definitely would be a plus. Maybe it helps to attract
new (esp. female members, which are kind of heavily underrepresented).
Taken how many expat-spouse or
"technical-educated-but-now-be-doomed-to-be-housewife" Japanese women
are around in Tokio, this might be really work out to increase the
amount of THS members.
THS would also get more shift away from technological centric hacking
and might start to get a even broader topic selection.

That would be interesting. I've been working closely with hackermoms...or I
should say, just advising my sis on what not to do. But it was her idea and
it is very cool. It'd be nice if we could offer some kind of childcare at
THS, possibly for meetings or for workshops.

How about a rotating voluntary position where a person or two occupy
the children with a "hacker children" lesson aimed at keeping them
occupied/enjoying some new toy? while the parents do the same?

But the best people to sort that out would be the hackers with
children or am I missing something ?

I don't think it's as easy as just having a volunteer watching the kids. At
hackermoms, there is a dedicated person for child care that they hire
specifically for that purpose. If in doubt, it's best to ask someone with
kids about how to deal with child care.

I think by volunteer they meant one of the hackers who has kids- more
like a play group.

Maybe 1 person paid and one of the Hackers "on rotation" working with them?

and yes... a volunteer "Hacker parent" just keeping an eye on the playgroup...

I'm open to just throwing that idea into the hat and seeing if someone
can pull a rabbit out, if its used or not...

I would think the space is tricky too. Guess hackermoms made sure
there is a reasonable safe place for the kids at the space. Having a
bunch of kids running around and someone else playing with some high
voltage tesla coils or just testing his new cannibalized blue-ray
laser might not fit well.

As for the caretaker... I was leading (ok that create a lot of smiles)
a scout group for some time in Germany. Dealing with parents is no
problem as long as *you* keep the kids busy, make sure they are tired
when they come home and make sure they are ok.
However, if it comes to education some parents have kind of
"interesting" approaches (to say polite). If you tell a kid on a
camp-site its not ok do to this or that, you might face an angry
mother or dad the end of the trip shouting you have no rights to
perform even the slightest form of educational measures (seriously
wtf., but I guess the teachers among us an fill evening with those
stories). Even worse if one of the kids get hurt, you can face
yourself with some legal actions against you.

Thus, having a child-care at THS needs some good preparation
(definitely some agreement written down and signed by the parents) to
avoid any problems later. As I said normally everything is hunky-dory
but be prepared if the shit hits the fan.

The space is, by-design, child proof. That is one of the reasons she started
Hackermoms. There are a lot of hackerspaces in the bay area including in
Berkeley (Ace Monster Toys). But its too dangerous for children to play in.
Mothership Hackermoms will be a child safe hackerspace so most likely, there
will only be a small space reserved for adults to play with dangerous
things.

The logo is awesome...
please ask your sister to get some shirts and I will order one for my wife ;)

CC. They place on a prominent space..... "DADs welcome too". Guess the
key message is the child-safe hackerspace and I really heard weird
stories about fathers who enjoy spending time with there kids....
strange I know.

I'll ask her if they'll have t-shirts available.

one idea in shibuya would be to look for an alternate activity for a
session. So instead of thinking what we could do for a meeting each
week- we could do a sat. workshop for the adults and provide some
activities and childcare up in yoyogi koen for the kids.

something like that.

Damm... Yoyogi Koen... I know where that is and its reasonably cheap
to get to from Matsudo City where I will be...

If anyone doesn't mind meeting up and showing me where the space is...
I'm more than willing to check things out and bring along my own toys
to show as well.

I'm not particularly fussy but one of the RepRap options is for
various extruders, one is also usable for chocolate. would this be a
fun thing for some of the children ??? what do the parents in think?
