Can anyone help me find 20-30 adult face masks, and 20-30 child masks?  They don’t need to be N95: just regular, simple face masks.

I’m staying at an AirBnB (in Hatsudai) to see my children over Easter.  The best option I’ve seen on Amazon doesn’t deliver to my local FamilyMart, and I don’t know how delivery here to the flat would work.

Thank you / ありがとう

Colin

Hi Colin,

Assuming the flat has an address and mailbox there should no problem for
delivery. If you happen to be absent during delivery they will leave a note and
you can ask for re-delivery. Just ask if you need help with Japanese.

Don't have any advice... local store are often out of stock. I have not really
been trying to buy some anyway.

Regarding COVID-19, unless you're sick or around sick ppl, mask are not
essential (WHO recommandation). Frequent hand washing and social distancing are
essential however.

I know there are other valid reason for needing masks such as pollen allergy

Thanks Alex.

I'm using the flat's address to receive a shipment now.

re: the general guidance, it seems to be shifting a bit in favour of masks as a low-cost step that helps a bit: see, for example, https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2020/03/would-everyone-wearing-face-masks-help-us-slow-pandemic#

As I understand it:
  1. a lot of people may be COVID positive but asymptomatic, so spreading COVID without knowing it.  A mask reduces the risk that these people aerosolise their coronavirus.
  2. if you're not COVID positive, it's a bit of a barrier, and may be a helpful reminder not to touch one's face.
Best,

Colin

Interesting read, thanks for sharing. It's definitely not black or white. You points are valid. I would imagine there is a psychological aspect as well.

A concern is that supply for health worker / hospital could run low. Not sure about Japan but it's definitely the case for part of US/Europe.

Honestly, if we had enough mask for everyone and we know there are effective enough, I would be fine with mandating everyone to wear one.

Agreed re: shortages for health workers.  Part of what struck me when looking for masks is that konbinis are keeping their staff masked.  Best, Colin
