Kyoto cabinet open becomes very slow

I made a 32 GB database to do some testing and when I tried to reopen it to do some further work the DB.open() operation started taking a long time. After about 40 mins I killed the process and tried running kchashmgr to try and get a value. I got a message telling me that the database is being reorganized. Is this normal? Will this happen every time or just once?

Usually it won't.  Check if it is recovering (may be you did not close it gracefully before shutdown).
