DStv Compact Plus and DStv Access are the two packages that are getting price hikes that are greater than South Africa's inflation rate of 6%. DStv Access is, however, getting a sports injection in the form of access to content from ESPN, La Liga, SuperSport Variety 4 and the SuperSport Blitz channels.

To promote its relaunched Showmax video streaming service, MultiChoice will soon rebrand and reprogramme one of the M-Net packaged linear TV channels on DStv to carry a curated offering of the content on offer on Showmax to aid sampling. This will include locally produced series for the Showmax platform that DStv subscribers will be able to watch on the linear channel.

MultiChoice is also introducing what the Randburg pay-TV operator calls a "price guarantee" agreement, whereby DStv subscribers can ensure that their subscription fees remain fixed for the period of their contract.

"Our priority is to ensure that we continue to provide unparalleled entertainment, which includes local South African stories and the world's best sports. Subscribers can look forward to an array of exciting content such as Big Brother Mzansi as well as major sporting events like the SA20 Cricket and the Olympic games."

"As Africa's premier entertainment provider, we are committed to delivering exceptional value to our customers. We have an excellent lineup of local and international shows and sports. Our customers can also look forward to continued savings on our DStv internet bundles, DStv insurance, and Namola."

But the price increment, which has now become an annual ritual did not just happen in Nigeria. Earlier in March, the PayTV operator had announced a price increase in its home country, South Africa, and Kenya, and the new prices have taken effect from April 1, 2024.

It is important to note that the income levels in each of these countries differ and that also plays a role in how charges are fixed for markets. This also helps to understand who is paying more relative to their level of income.

Based on the income levels, it is safe to say that Kenyans are paying more for DStv services out of the three countries. On the other hand, rates in South Africa are the cheapest going by their average income. This indicates that Nigerians are paying more than South Africans.

This dramatically underestimates the average and median salaries of Nigerians and lacks any credible sources to justify it. Additionally, comparing the post-tax incomes of Kenyans and South Africans is essential, as wage earners in these countries typically pay more in taxes than their Nigerian counterparts.

Some people still think DSTV is a viable model when we in western region had Television station even before France and all other African countries. Until we retrace our steps, Nigeria will continue to be a ridicule until we return power back to the regional ethnic nationals in Nigeria.

In a recent announcement, Multichoice Kenya has disclosed that they are going to be increasing their prices for its DStv business packages by up to 7.2 percent due to inflation. MultiChoice further disclosed that these increased prices in business packages will come into effect from 1st September 2022.

MultiChoice Kenya revised the subscription prices for all its DStv packages in a notice sent to customers on August 1, and will also apply to the commercial DStv Business Work, Play, and Stay packages.

This MultiChoice-owned pay television provider last raised its prices in August 2023, meaning the hike is coming in less than a year. On Wednesday, the company notified all existing DStv subscribers in Kenya that their rates will be increasing from next month.

The Ksh1,300 per month price for DStv Access, the next subscription option after the basic plan, will remain unchanged, but the following DStv Family package will see a shoot by over 8%. The Ksh1,850-a-month plan will now cost Ksh2,000.

Users on its Ksh3,500 per month Compact package will now have to pay Ksh3,700, those paying Ksh6,200 per month for Compact Plus will have to pay Ksh6,500, and the prices for the high-end version, DStv Premium, which allows for simultaneous streaming, including free Showmax to access on-demand content and allowing subscribers to add Box Office for endless movies, will jump to Ksh10,500 a month from Ksh9,900.

Prices for some DStv add-on packages are going up as well, and subscribers will be expected to pay Ksh4,300 down from Ksh4,100 monthly to get French Plus, Great Wall Standalone will now cost Ksh810 per month from Ksh770, and the French Touch add-on will go for Ksh960/month from Kh920 after the price rise.

In 1993, when Multichoice launched its operations in Nigeria, its entry into the Nigerian market marked a significant shift in the entertainment space. The company was offering a pay TV with a wider selection of channels, including international programming, sports, and movies. Multichoice heavily emphasized the novelty and prestige associated with having access to premium content. This means that initially, the target audience likely consisted of affluent Nigerians and those with a strong desire for international entertainment. Eventually, the company introduced cheaper packages, channel selection options, and the budget-friendly GOtv. In 2018, they even considered introducing a pay-as-you-consume pricing scheme. This strategy expanded their customer base. MultiChoice added 1 million subscribers in 2021, bringing the total to 21.1 million pay-TV subscribers.

However, in 2021, MultiChoice, lost over 100,000 DStv Premium and DStv Compact Plus subscribers decreasing another 5%, and DStv Compact and DStv Commercial customers declined by 1%, from 2.9 million to 2.8 million subscribers. The top-end loss is made up for ongoing lower-tiered subscriber growth, increasing from 8.7 to 8.9 million subscribers. However, the mass-market DStv Family, DStv Access, and DStv EasyView subscribers grew by 6%, from 4.4 million to 4.7 million. What it means is that although MultiChoice continues to have more subscribers, it makes less money per subscriber since it keeps losing DStv Premium and DStv Compact Plus subscribers, who are its most valuable subscriber segments.

The Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal has ordered MultiChoice Nigeria to suspend its price increases for its DStv and GOtv packages. The order, brought by consumer rights activist Festus Onifade accuses the pay-TV company of unjustly increasing its prices. Onifade asked the tribunal to put a hold on the increases and not take any intermediate actions that may harm consumer rights. Interestingly, this order was disregarded by Multichoice.
