bismillah. i really like the chain concept implemented in
todoist.com. but i ask myself, what about when i miss a deadline in
my chain, can i really make it up?

sometimes the answer should be yes, of course you can make it up.
suppose i make a chain to complete a chapter of a book each week.
then i could make up that missed chapter.

but suppose the chain is a reminder to take advantage of some
opportunity that cannot be made up. the missing link in the chain --
the box that will never be filled in -- could be a reminder to me that
i have to take this task more seriously. and a series of such empty
links would be a way of telling me that i have to re-examine my
commitment to this task or re-priortize what was in conflict.

so the requested features (because i thought of another one while
typing):

1. !chain-open or some similar command that creates a chain but does
not let the person mark an instance of the task as complete if it
becomes overdue. that overdue item would also not linger in the
overdue pile, because the overdue pile is for items you could
complete. if i understand the mechanism of the web site correctly,
the change would be that the task would automatically advance to the
next instance but would NOT mark the overdue instance as complete.

2. a special chain-search that let you see all the tasks you DID
complete on the day you failed to complete this chain instance.

bismillah. the "missing link"-effect works. i just switched a chain-
task from twice a week to every day. because i had begun the task last
week, when i changed the date of the task to "every day," i was shown
a chain with missing links between the two days i had completed.

so i really think this enabling missing links would enhance the chain
feature. because my chain will not look good until i get far enough
along to hide the gap. and that is a good incentive to stay on track.
