First Counselor George Q. Cannon is sentenced to six months in prison and fined $300 for polygamy. Before sentencing the judge reminds Cannon that he has discretion in sentencing and says, "I would love to know that you could conform to the law." Cannon replies "I cannot state what I will do in the future." He is given the maximum allowed sentence. (1)

Went to Z.C.M.I tried to get pair of shoes on credit but they would not let me have them until I paid bill thirty or forty dol[lars] account of several mo[nths]. standing which I owed them. I was vexed because I have been in financial trouble lately, but will soon pay them. Had my hair cut[;] quite an event for me because of its slow growth. (2)
