(Zion's Camp) One man swears to kill the Mormons or else the buzzards can eat his flesh. His boat sinks, he drowns, and his body floats downstream until he gets lodged on an island; the buzzards end up eating his flesh. (1)

"Martin Harris having boasted to the brethren that he could handle snakes with perfect safety, while fooling with a black snake with his bare feet, he received a bite on his left foot. The fact was communicated to me [Joseph Smith], and I took occasion to reprove him, and exhort the brethren never to trifle with the promises of God."

A meeting is held between Mormons in Jackson County, Missouri and non-Mormon residents there. The non-Mormon residents offer to either buy out the Mormons or to allow the Mormons to buy them out. The first option is refused on religious grounds, the second for economic reasons.

I will preach on the plurality of Gods. * * *

Our text says, "And hath made us kings and priests unto God and His Father." * * * My object was to preach the scriptures, and preach the doctrine they contain, there being a God above, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. * * *

Eloheim is from the word Eloi, God, in the singular number; and by adding the word heim, it renders it Gods. It read first, "In the beginning the head of the Gods brought forth the Gods," or, as others have translated it, "The head of the Gods called the Gods together." * * *

The head God organized the heavens and the earth. In the beginning the heads of the Gods organized the heavens and the earth. * * * The head one of the Gods said, Let us make a man in our own image. I once asked a learned Jew, "If the Hebrew language compels us to render all words ending in heim in the plural, why not render the first Eloheim plural?" He replied, "That is the rule with few exceptions; but in this case it would ruin the Bible." He acknowledged I was right. * * *

In the very beginning the Bible shows there is a plurality of Gods beyond the power of refutation. It is a great subject I am dwelling on. The word Eloheim ought to be in the plural all the way through---Gods. The heads of the Gods appointed one God for us; and when you take that view of the subject, it sets one free to see all the beauty, holiness and perfections of the Gods. (2)

President John Taylor's secretary records: ". . . after due consideration of the whole case the First Presidency decided that Sister Ellen Clifford be permitted to make her choice as to whether she will be sealed to her first husband Thomas Andrews (dead) or to her second husband John E. Hansen (now living) and in case she chooses to be sealed to Bro. Hansen, that Bro. Hansen be instructed to do all in his power in behalf of Bro. Andrews in obtaining Endowments for him, and it is also suggested that he and Sister Hansen have some woman sealed to Bro. Andrews and also have the children and Bro. Andrews adopted into their family." (3)

Hirini Whaanga, Mere Whaanga, Apikara Whaanga and four children sailed from Auckland, New Zealand, bound for Utah. these were the first Maori Saints who gathered to Zion. They emigrated in charge of Elders William Douglas, Wesley Gibson and Lars Christian Rasmussen, returning missionaries. (4)

President [N. Eldon] Tanner presented the request of Elder Theodore M. Burton [of ] the Genealogical Department for instructions in the matter of sealing living persons by proxy as in cases where the living person is mentally or physically so incapacitated that he cannot come to the Temple for the ordinances, and also in cases where the mental age is not determined. He reviewed the ruling that when a person is not physically or mentally able to go to the Temple the work may be done by proxy. Problems included are: Who decides whether the mental age is eight years or over? The Genealogical Department has been informed that a competent physician may determine the mental age and if it is not eight years of age the child is not baptized, but that such a child may be sealed to parents. I directed that each case be considered on its special circumstances. (5)
