MEMORANDUM
N20-004

Dearest Chaplains, Chaplain Assistants, Youth Leader Trainers, Youth Leaders, and Youth Members:

As the prevalence and impact of the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) that causes the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the Vietnamese Eucharistic Youth Movement (VEYM) is monitoring the situation closely both in the U.S. and abroad. We’re also blessed to be looped in regularly with the President’s Coronavirus Taskforce situation report as well as other credible health officials.

With the VEYM’s ever busy season approaching, ongoing efforts are taking place to assess our ability to safely support the dozens and hundreds of youth and youth leaders who will participate in retreats, training camps, conventions, and other gatherings that are scheduled between now until the end of September. At the present, we expect all events (Annual Servant Leaders Retreat, Tiberia 15, Specialty Training Camp, and the Coming to the Promised Land National Convention 7) at the national level will continue as planned. We anticipate events at the League of Chapters and Chapter level will follow suit, however, those decisions are at the discretion of the respective Executive Committee (Ban Chấp Hành). It is important to note that the current situation is dynamic and ever evolving, and the need to make adjustment may occur if conditions change over the coming weeks or months. The VEYM’s highest priority during this challenging time is the safety and well-being of our members.

As we continue with our ministry, it is vital that we as individuals and Organizing Committees (Ban Tổ Chức) take serious the recommendations of the Center for Disease Control (CDC) to aid in the prevention of the spread of respiratory diseases such as the COVID-19:

Individual Prevention Efforts
-Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use recommended alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
-Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
-Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
-Stay home if you have a fever, difficulty breathing/shortness of breath or believe you are
sick.
-Cough and sneeze into your elbow or a tissue and dispose the tissue in the trash.
-Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
-Avoid sharing anything that has come into contact with saliva (chewed pens, VEYM whistles, etc…)

Organizing Committee Prevention Efforts
-Provide ample prevention supplies [soap, hand sanitizers, tissues, and disposable facemasks (for
members who exhibit symptoms such as fever, shortness of breath or cough)].
-Promote messaging that discourage members who are sick from attending events. This should include
messages requesting members to leave events if they begin to have symptoms stated above.
-If possible, identify a space that can be used to isolate members who become ill at the event. Designate
a space for members who may become sick and cannot leave the event immediately.
-Plan ways to limit in-person contact for members at your events, especially close-contact activities.
-Identify actions to take should the Organizing Committee need to postpone or cancel events.

Regarding Recent Travel
If you have recently returned from Vietnam (while Vietnam’s report of confirmed cases is significantly low and does not correlate with neighboring countries that share similar conditions, there is a high probability that the number of confirmed cases within Vietnam is underreported), interacted with family members or people returning from Vietnam or from an area with active communal spread of the coronavirus (China, Italy, Korea, Iran, etc…), it is recommended that you self-quarantine for 14 days or more to monitor your symptoms. If you exhibit signs of illness such as fever, cough, or difficulty breathing/shortness of breath, you should contact your nearest health care provider immediately.

Managing Anxiety
While the coronavirus is a health concern that is taken seriously, it is important that we not let our worry about this virus control our lives. Below are simple and effective approaches to manage our anxieties. Adopting these can help improve our overall emotional and physical well-being:
-Recognize common reactions. Recognizing and accepting that there can be a wide range of common reactions (anxiety, worry or fear) to the coronavirus reporting that is saturated over the media and social media.
-Know the facts. Stay abreast with the latest health and travel information from the Center for Disease Control, World Health Organization, and U.S. Department of State.
-Focus on the things you can control. Adopting healthy hygienic habits as outlined above.
-Limit your attention to the things you cannot control. Lessen your worry and agitation by limiting the
time you spend watching or listening to frustrating media coverage. Although you’ll want to be informed, remember to take breaks from watching the news and focus on the things that are positive in your life and things you have control over. Anxiety does and can weaken your immune system which is vital to combating infectious diseases.
-Be mindful of your anxiety and assumptions of others. Someone who has a cough or a fever does not
necessarily have the coronavirus. Self-awareness is important in not stigmatizing others in our community.
-Maintain a balanced nutrition and stay active. Keeping the recommended nutritional intake and participating in healthy recreational activities improve your ability to cope and manage with stress.
-Pray often and offer our worries to Christ. #OfferItUp.

As always, should you have questions or recommendations, please don’t hesitate to contact the VEYM at headqu...@veym.net or consult with reliable health agencies listed above for guidance. Thank you all for your effort in keeping the VEYM safe during this challenging time.

May Christ, through the advocacy of Mary and St. Joseph, keep us forever safe in His Most Sacred Heart.

Subject: Re: VEYM Memorandum: Coronavirus Awareness and Response

Guy you guy really need to do your homework, coronavirus is nothing, the flu is worse than a coronavirus, remember the swine flu H1N1, that people freak out in 2009. You know how many people I dx at work everyday. Most of flu A this year is swine flu. The covid19 is less than that. Go online and look, see if you can find a kid or a young adult that died from it. it only kill people with bad health like ever other diseases or a common cold.
