MEMORANDUM: N20-005

Dearest Chaplains, Chaplain Assistants, Youth Leader Trainers, Youth Leaders, and Youth Members:

The current pandemic of COVID-19 is the focus of public health agencies and communities here at home and around the world, and it is a concern for all of us as members of the Vietnamese Eucharistic Youth Movement (VEYM).  There is some good news! According to a recent publication by Wu and McGoogan (2020) in the Journal of American Medical Association, the authors studied 72,314 COVID-19 patient records and through their findings, the majority of infections (80 percent), are mild, flu-like illness, and can be managed at home. Nonetheless, there is reason for concern as well.  About 15 percent of infections are severe and require hospitalization, and an additional five percent are critical and require intensive care.

For all individuals who develop COVID-19, the average mortality (death) rate is around two percent, higher in some countries and much lower in others. We know certain groups are at higher risk of a more severe illness:  individuals from age 50-69, with increases from 70-79 and a sharp increase from 80-89.  We also know that individuals with underlying medical conditions are at increased risk of more severe illness.  These conditions include underlying lung problems, heart disease, diabetes, and conditions that affect how well someone can clear their airways and cough effectively.

While the majority of our VEYM members do not fall within the population categorized at higher risk of a more severe illness, we are also mindful of those we often interact with within our homes and communities (e.g., parents, grandparents, family members and friends with medical conditions outlined above, etc.) who fall within the higher risk category.

The safety and well-being of our members and families are our primary concern, as such, in an effort to aggressively prevent the spread of the COVID-19 and in following the guidance from the Center for Disease Control, the National Executive Committee (Ban Chấp Hành Trung Ương) provides the following updates:

A. The upcoming VEYM Headquarters Grand Open House (April 18, 2020) and Specialty Training Camp-Holy Mass/Sa Mạc Chuyên Đề Phụng Vụ-Thánh Lễ (May 22-25, 2020) will be postponed to a later date.

-Those who registered for the Specialty Training Camp can either request a full refund or defer their registration to the TBA rescheduled date. Those who have purchased their flight tickets, please reach out to the respective airline company to request a full refund or credit to be applied to future travels. Most airline companies have implemented a flexible refund policy without penalty.

B. The grand Coming to the Promised Land Convention 7/Đại Hội Về Đất Hứa 7 (July 2-5, 2020) and Tiberia 15-Servant Leader Training Camp/Sa Mạc Lãnh Đạo Phục Vụ-Tiberia 15 (August 12-16, 2020) will continue as planned.

-In recognizing the potential impact of the current event has on our prospective members who may need additional time to consider registering for the Coming to the Promised Land Convention, the Organizing Committee will extend the $215 registration fee deadline to April 15, 2020. The Organizing Committee has been hard at work to line up some of the best keynote speakers, VIP guests, breakout session presenters, performers, competitions, prizes, music, swags, social hours, networking, exhibitions, and most importantly, active participation in the liturgy. Don’t miss out!

As highlighted in the previous announcement, N20-004 Coronavirus and Response, it is important that each and every one of us take seriously the prevention measures to stop the spread of COVID-19.  Please revisit guidance on Individual Prevention Efforts, Organizing Committee Prevention Efforts, Recent Travel, and Managing Anxiety in attached announcement. It is equally important that each League of Chapters and Chapters follow the directives from local Arch/Diocese and government regarding organized events, activities and gatherings. VEYM Headquarters will continue to monitor closely as new developments are available and will make adjustment as needed.

During this challenging time, the National Executive Committee invites everyone to pray diligently for those impacted by the virus, and to have unwavering trust in the Lord. Just as Abraham trusted in God and kept hope to move forward despite feeling alone, tired and old, we too must believe, have hope and learn to see with eyes of faith for God’s plan for us will never disappoint. “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose hope is the LORD.” (Jeremiah 17:7)

May Christ’s merciful love, through the powerful intercession of Our Lady of Healing and St. Joseph, protect us from infectious diseases and illnesses.

Signed,
