Greetings friends and food eaters,

Nashville Urban Harvest is pleased to announce our Spring-Summer CSA for the 2009 growing season. All produce in our CSA is grown locally at the West Nashville Community Farm, an urban farm devoted to practical education and awareness around sustainable agriculture and a vibrant local food system.  For more more details please download the attached documents or visit http://nashvilleurbanharvest.org/pages/CSA-2009.

Please email c...@nashvilleurbanharvest.org for additional questions.

What is a CSA?

CSAis short for Community Supported Agriculture. It is a system that links local growers with local communities. Individuals or families buy a share of the vegetables and fruits that will be grown over the season at our farm, starting in mid to late May for the middle Tennessee region.

Why should I buy into Nashville Urban Harvest's CSA? I can just go to the grocery store!

First, we use sustainable agriculture practices—no chemical pesticides and improved soil health means better health for you and your family. Second, the cost of your share supports our work directly, covering the cost of seed, salary, and farm equipment. Most importantly, your food is local and fresh. We pick it on Tuesday and you pick it up on Wednesday!

What comes in my share?

Each week your share will have a mix of enough veggies for 3-4 people for the week. A typical box has a variety—a salad mix, spinach, peas, radishes, and a mix of greens including Swiss chard, kale, and arugula in early summer; and tomatoes, corn, cucumbers, zucchini, potatoes, herbs, peppers, garlic, onions, and carrots in mid-summer. Each weekly box typically contains 5-10 different types of produce, according to seasonal availability.

What is the cost?

Our 15 week spring-summer CSA begins when the crops are ready for harvest, and we plan to have the first harvest ready on Wednesday, May 13th. The CSA will run through August 19th or 15 weeks after the start date. The cost is $375, with a $30 discount for shareholders who sign up and provide payment by March 4th. We do not offer half-shares, but we welcome shareholders who wish to split their shares with others.

We also plan to offer a fall CSA—look for information as we enjoy the summer!

There are also subsidized shares available for families with a low income. Please see the separate application attached or email c...@nashvilleurbanharvest.org.
