Dear All,
Workshop for Growers "Why is it Important to Monitor & Manage
Substrate/Soil/Water pH & EC?"
Tennessee State University will welcome growers and home gardeners from
Nashville and surrounding areas to its main campus on Wednesday, December
10th, to participate in a workshop involving soil quality and salinity. The
workshop, held from 9:30a.m. until 12:30p.m. in Room 118 of the James E.
Farrell-Fred E. Westbrook Building, will explore the importance of
monitoring and managing substrate, soil and water pH and EC.
Workshop facilitator, Dharma Pitchay, Ph.D., Research and Extension
Assistant Professor of Horticulture in the School of Agriculture and
Consumer Sciences, says the workshop is particularly for growers who are
interested in the nutritional value of their soil. "Root substrate pH and
EC directly affect the availability of nutrients to plants," he said.
"Therefore, it is critical for growers and home gardeners to monitor and
manage the optimum pH and EC of the root substrate, soil and water."
Pitchay encourages growers to bring samples of their garden soil to the
workshop so the growers can learn more about the quality of their soil and
what they as independent growers can do to manage it.
"The availability of inexpensive instruments in the market can assist
growers and home gardeners to measure the pH and EC," he added. "It will
provide them with added advantage of using technology to make an informed
decision in a timely manner. This strategic approach of monitoring and
managing the substrate and water pH and EC is vital for a successful and
enterprising sustainable grower. "
This workshop is a part of a series of workshops that will be conducted
throughout the upcoming year to assist growers and home gardeners with soil
maintenance. For additional information, call Linda Buchanan at (615)
