My Honest 2 Cents

I do have some experience of using the both the IOL Master 700 and LENSTAR 900 with APS. I also have a number of Zeiss and Haag Streit products in my setup (apart from other companies).

My interpretations / experience are mentioned below (absolutely no financial interest

SNo.

IOL Master700

Lenstar

Comments

1.

Zeiss

Haag Streit

Parent company Zeiss Germany were very insensitive and could not answer academic & technical questions I raised about the IOL Master 700. Zeiss India was rather on their toes and proactive to get the queries solved, but I could see through that they were not able to get any backend support from Zeiss Germany.

With Hagg Streit, once I raised queries – they immediately sent me all that I asked for.

2.

Non Existent Distant Independent  TeleCentric Keratometry

Reliable Keratometry

Zeiss IOL Master requires you to focus the Keratometry Mires during acquisition of mires – Hence IT IS NOT DISTANCE INDEPENDENT / TELECENTRIC – a false claim.

The LENSTAR Keratometry is simple & very much more reliable – with no such claims

3.

Integrated Operating System (Windows XP/7) – OUTDATED

& no support available

Independent of Windows Operating System Version

Kindly look in these situations –

1.     Your computer crashes – In case you have a Zeiss IOL MASTER 700 – you have to pay a huge sum to get it rectified as most of the integrated components will not be available in your local Computer store, and you have to rely on Zeiss to provide the outdated Windows XP/7 compatible components.

But the Lenstar comes with a separate hardware both for the console and a separate PC.

In worse situations all you have to do is replace tour PC or laptop, in case replacing parts in your computer doesn’t do the job. Same issues remain with your Monitor, mouse, keyboard ….

4.

Only POST-SCRIPT PRINTERs

Any Printer does the job

As the Zeiss IOL Master is an integrated system where THERE IS NO OPTION OF MANUPILATING, and also as it runs on Windows XP/7 – Only Post Script printers are advised by Zeiss. Let me ask all of you that when and where any of you have you ever used Post Script Printers in this age.

Getting cartridges for the same is tough, give that one will be looking at least 5 to 8 years of service from this Zeiss machine, where will you get these printers / service / cartridges?, as the IT industry moves forward, and this machine will become redundant & outdated (if is not already). Hardware will always be a challenge…

Having a separate computer on the Lenstar, which will run on modern Windows 10 – will perhaps not face such difficulties.

5.

IOL Calculation formula – Outdated – given the unjustified cost of the machine

All contemporary IOL Calculation formulas available

The Zeiss IOL Master 700 in its present avatar – does not have Hill RBF, Olsen, Barret modern generation calculation formulas.

With the Lenstar you are spoilt for choices – everything you need and beyond

6.

Cataract Penetration is good but not at all possible in all cases

Cataract Penetration is not bad – but maybe very slightly less than IOL MASTER 700 but much better than IOL Maser 500

In case you are interested in evaluating this aspect – please do a macular analysis on a dedicated retinal OCT, in patients where the Lenstar was not able to get the Axial Length – one will realize that even the dedicated retinal OCT will not get you reliable images and SCI / SSI values.

7.

Unreliable BOUNDARY TRACING

OLCR Technology - No dependence on the same

I have demonstrated to the Zeiss Product Specialists – that both in hard cataracts and clear lenses,  the crystalline lens boundary determination is grossly faulty & inaccurate – hence the values are unreliable for modern generation formulas (where lens thickness is a major factor)

Lenstar OLCR technology has simpler ways of doing the lens thickness calculation.

8.

Not Possible in NORROW PALPEBRAL FISSURES

Possible in NORROW PALPEBRAL FISSURES

Due to the present design of the IOL MASTER 700 – one can’t even assist by using examiners thumb / fingers to open the eyelids further

9.

Toric IOL planning & precise calculation NOT POSSIBLE

Barret Toric IOL platform available – Allows calculation & planning

I feel it is very unfair to pay a huge amount for a Zeiss IOL Master 700 – which is a NOTHING ON TORIC IOL PLANNING & CALCULATION
