Grammar Foundations Workshop:
This workshop is designed to build a strong foundation of grammar concepts and mechanics for high school students. This course will help students who may not have received adequate grammar instruction in the past, who feel lost in grammar or who simply have gaps in their understanding and feel confused. During the course, students will review concepts and rules related to: forming grammatically correct complex sentences, using commas appropriately, knowing how to use semicolons, colons or coordinating conjunctions, and learning about subject verb agreement, diction, appositives, transition words, parallelism and much more. Students will have the chance to nail down any concepts they've missed and learn how to apply their knowledge of grammar to improve their writing. This workshop is also helpful for students trying to improve their English scores on the ACT or Writing scores on the SAT.
- July 13th, 15th, 20th, 22nd from 1 - 3 pm
Essay Writing Workshop:
An 8 hour workshop designed to help students develop and fine-tune their skills in the essay writing process. This course will cover the various types of academic essays and themes they are required to write in high school, such as explication, research, and analysis (theme, symbol, and character based). Students will go over each step in the drafting and writing process: brainstorming, thesis constructing, outlining, finding evidence, writing a draft directly from an outline, using academic and eloquent language, and revising the essay.
Students will construct an outline template that will be useful for any future essay or theme assignment and will learn how to utilize it to the fullest extent. Additionally, they will learn tips on how to prepare ahead of time for the essay writing process, including ways to engage with their course material before they’ve been given a prompt in anticipation of an essay.
