I will be running creativity camps this summer. Small teams of kids will be working together to come up with a solution using manipulatives (Legos, K’Nex, pattern blocks, etc.). While it’s not specifically for executive functioning, executive functioning skills that will be boosted are: time management to solve challenge within time constraints, planning and organization to solve the problems, etc. and I explicitly teach leadership skills and social skills as every activity requires teamwork. Kids will also be assessing themselves and the teamwork within the group so that they can tangibly see their improvements.
My goals for this camp are to:
- Create a multi-age, family-like, safe atmosphere where creativity can flourish
- Build self-esteem and self-competency through collaboration
- Reinforce deductive reasoning and ‘out-of the-box’ thinking as teams solve challenges together both indoors and outside
- Reinforce building and construction with multiple mediums (Legos, K’Nex, straws, pipe cleaners, food, etc.)
- Reinforce scientific reasoning through candy experiments
- Reinforce comfort of performing in front of people through creative, team-derived skits and magic tricks
- Facilitate the discovery of what makes a good leader through giving each child the opportunity to lead their group.
If this type of camp would benefit you, please let me know and I’ll give you more info.
Warmly,
Shari Jensen
