Study & Learning Techniques Course

The Study & Learning Techniques Workshop is designed to teach students how to organize binders & materials, manage time wisely, use paper planners & web-based tools to record assignments, check email regularly, prepare for upcoming deadlines, take efficient notes from a lecture and textbook, sustain attention, manage digital learning devices, navigate remote learning, and learn how to study efficiently and effectively for different types of tests in various subjects.


Critical Reading Techniques

The Advanced Reading Comprehension course is designed to improve students' reading comprehension and critical thinking skills as they read novels, textbooks, articles, and standardized test passages. Students will develop techniques for reading actively, engaging and sustaining attention, annotating and note-taking, identifying themes and motifs, finding relevant, important facts and analyzing various passages. Elementary level workshop focuses on age appropriate reading comprehension techniques.



Writing Persuasive Essays with Evidence

This workshop is designed to help students develop and fine-tune their skills in writing academic essays using evidence from various sources. This course will cover various types of academic essays and themes required in high school, such as explication, research, and analysis (theme, symbol, and character based). Students will learn how to construct an outline template that will be useful for future essays and theme assignments.
Students will go over each step in the drafting and writing process: 
  • brainstorming
  • thesis constructing
  • outlining
  • finding evidence to support each claim 
  • identifying relevant supporting details 
  • writing a draft
  • using academic language & transition words
  • revising the essay 

Creative Writing Course

This workshop is designed to help develop students' creative writing. Students will learn how to craft a story arc, generate captivating introductions, develop character profiles and express their ideas fluently and clearly in their writing. 
 

Grammar Course

The Grammar Course is designed to teach students the key concepts and grammar rules necessary for high school and standardized tests like the ACT and SAT. This class is appropriate for rising 8th - 12th graders.This class is perfect for students trying to raise their score on the English or Writing portion of the ACT and SAT. Students will learn grammar concepts & rules for:
  • identifying the parts of speech    
  • comma rules 
  • using colons, semi-colons and dashes 
  • subject verb agreement 
  • parallelism 
  • appositives & idols
  • using transition words appropriately 
  • wordiness & redundancy 
  • punctuation, pronouns & modifiers
  • who vs whom, that vs which, and much more!

 

Summer Reading Book Club

Summer Reading Book Club is designed to work with a small group of students on their summer reading assignments throughout the summer. Students will work on reading and discussing the chapters in their book in a small group. During the discussions, they will also learn the following strategies: 

Students will develop techniques for:
  • how to read actively
  • how to sustain attention while reading
  • how to identify main ideas and important details
  • how to summarize each chapter
  • how to predict, reflect, and analyze
  • how to ask questions about the reading 
  • how to write a summary of the book



Standardized Test Prep Courses

ACT Overview Course
 

The ACT Overview course covers specific test-taking strategies for the English, Math, Reading & Science portions of the test. This class will increase familiarity with test question types and provide a deep dive into key content on the ACT. This class is ideal for first and second time test takers.


ACT Intensive 10-Hour Workshop
 

The ACT Intensive Workshop covers specific test-taking strategies in depth for the English, Math, Reading & Science portions of the test. This intensive will increase familiarity with test question types and provide a deep dive into key content on the ACT. Students will take multiple practice tests, review crucial grammar and math concepts, develop reading strategies for different passage types and learn how to master the science reasoning portion of the ACT.


 SAT Overview Course

The SAT Overview Course will cover general and specific test-taking strategies that will increase familiarity with both the content and type of questions included on the SAT. Students will focus on the Writing, Evidence-Based Reading, Math with a Calculator and Math without Calculator sections of the test.


SAT Intensive 5-Hour Workshop
 

The SAT Intensive Workshop covers specific test-taking strategies in depth for the Writing, Evidence-Based Reading & Math portions of the test. This intensive will increase familiarity with test question types and provide a deep dive into key content on the SAT. Students will take multiple practice tests, review crucial grammar and math concepts, develop reading strategies for different passage types and learn how to manage their time throughout the test.


Middle Level ISEE Workshop

Based on the strategies created by our Director and Cognitive Learning Specialist, Kimberly Carraway, our virtual summer ISEE Prep Courses are for rising 6th & 7th graders who will be taking the Middle Level ISEE this year. The course will engage students in test taking strategies, content review, and tips and tricks to maximize their performance on the test.

Math Prep Courses:

Elementary Math - Pre-Algebra - Algebra I - 
Geometry - Algebra II 


Rising 4th & 5th Grader Math Prep & Review: 

A two hour class offered three different times throughout the summer for rising 4th and 5th graders who need to review key math facts (math fact fluency, multiplication, division) and who want a review of key mathematical procedures. You can register for one, two or three days. This class is designed to be a fun way to refresh math skills before the year begins.

  • Multiplication Facts Review, Multiplication & Decimals
  • Fractions, Long Division & More

Pre-Algebra Course: 

A Pre-Algebra skills workshop for students moving into Pre-Algebra this year . During the course, students will learn key concepts and mathematical procedures covered in the first semester of Pre-Algebra and review content covered at the end of the school year. This is a great course for students who struggled through math or who may need to solidify their mathematical knowledge before starting Pre-Algebra.
 

Algebra I Course: 

An Algebra skills workshop for students moving from Pre-Algebra to Algebra . During the course, students will learn key concepts and mathematical procedures covered in the first semester of Algebra 1 and review content covered at the end of the school year. This is a great course for students who struggled through Pre-Algebra/Math 8 and need to solidify their mathematical knowledge before starting Algebra 1.

 

Geometry Course:

A Geometry skills workshop for students entering Geometry or seeking review. The course will focus on basic geometric concepts (points, lines, and planes) in addition to ideas like area, volume, and angles. This course may also be of interest for students preparing for the ACT who have forgotten some of the concepts previously learned in Geometry. 

 

Algebra II Course:

An Algebra II skills workshop for students entering Algebra II or seeking review. The course will focus on preparing students for the difficult concepts in semester 1 of Algebra II as well as on integrating the most important lessons from Algebra I AND Geometry that are necessary to succeed in the course. This is a great course for students who struggled through Algebra 1 and need to solidify their algebraic knowledge base over the summer. Students who need a review of Algebra II for the ACT or SAT will also benefit from the course.

Science Courses:

Physical Science - Biology - Chemistry - Physics
 

Physical Science Course: 

A preview of key concepts covered during the first few months of Physical Science. This course is designed to give students a foundational understanding of concepts, terms and equations they will encounter during their class next year. 
 

Biology: 

A preview of key concepts covered during the first few months of Biology. This course is designed to give students a foundational understanding of concepts, terms and equations they will encounter during their class next year. A discussion on writing lab reports will also be covered.

 

Chemistry:

A preview of key concepts covered during the first few months of Chemistry. This course is designed to give students a foundational understanding of concepts, terms and equations they will encounter during their class next year. A discussion on elements, the periodic table, learning tools and how to write lab reports will also be covered.

 

Physics:

A preview of key concepts covered during the first few months of Physical Science. This course is designed to give students a foundational understanding of concepts, terms and equations they will encounter during their class next year. A discussion on writing lab reports will also be covered.
