Can no longer bind-key to backslash key

It seems that in a recent tmux update, I can no longer use the following config:

bind-key \ split-window -h -c '#{pane_current_path}'

This setting now yields the following error in Tmux 3.1b:

unknown key: split-window

My guess is that \ is now conflicting with something recently introduced. Any way to get this working again?

bind-key -T prefix \\ split-window -h -c "#{pane_current_path}"
