tmux-3.x for RHEL7

Can 3.x branch be compiled for RHEL7? I've tried, and I get an error that says
cc cannot build files in config.log

Looks like it is running gcc -V which is not valid with the gcc I have on RHEL7 host.

gcc version 4.8.5 20150623 (Red Hat 4.8.5-44) (GCC)
