 Please Be Advised:

I have contacted Comcast (Government Affairs Division) regarding the Cable In the Classrooms Program (CIC) for TMS.  As you know, this service is free to all schools and is used by more than 81,000 schools across the country.  It will be a useful tool to our instructors at TMS along with other technologies which may be approved/adopted in the coming months.   Step 1 in the process is conducting a survey (hereinafter, the Survey Phase) at the site to see what cable service, if any exists, and what needs to be put in place to effectuate getting CIC capability to the site.  Again, this is a free service.    The Survey Phase takes 30 days, accounting from June 11, 2007.   The contact person is Linda Ransome who may be reached at 301-306-5721.  She reports that she operates best using telephone voicemail.   Ms. Ransome has been given Alicia Newell's name as the contact person at the school, along with the physical address of the school, and the telephone number there.   Ms. Ransome will contact Ms. Newell and/or me to give updates as needed.  All of this information has been personally relayed to Ms. Newell and the future "done by" date given for calendar management purposes.

Updates will be posted  here as they are received.

I welcome any questions or comments.

Robin, this is fantastic! How will we display the information coming from the cable feed, through television or LCD projector?

Hi Lisa:

When Erin Fontaine made her presentation, I asked if cable could be run through and projected onto the smart board.  She said yes.  Therefore, I believe the feed can be run through the projector and there will not be a need for othe AV equipment.  While the survey is being done, I can try to lock down the specs for that, especially resolution and image quality, audio, etc.  I will also try to nail down personnel to "install" anything that we cannot do, so that they can be on board once we get the go ahead for this thing.   If a cost is involved, I will work on ways to reduce that to its lowest point as well.  Let's keep our fingers crossed and remain diligent.

United Streaming can be run through the projector as well, isn't that right?

Robin.

Absolutely it can. That's how most teachers run United Streaming. I am currently working a a list of online resources such as United Streaming, that we should look at getting for both the teachers and students. These resources would allow students to conduct and or complete online research and investigations. Right now, most of our students just go to Google and type in the search box. But, there are county approved sites, (screened and approved by library/media services) that should be made available to the TMS community. I will gather that list and post today.

That's great.

Do you know whether the full text of resources such as World Book Encyclopedia are available via United Streaming?  Currently, the CD roms of these resources have only partial listings and are no where near complete as the hard bound volumes.  If so, this information should be made available to the teachers and parents.
