On June 11, 2007, a request for Cable in the Classroom services was
made to Comcast, the participating cable provider. There are three
(3) phases to the program: survey, construction, and implementation.
The Survey Phase of the Cable in the Classroom has been completed, and
the project is now ready to move into the Construction Phase of the
Classroom, if feasible. The following considerations are pertinent
and impact implementation.
The Survey Phase has shown that there will be a $1500.00 cost
associated with obtaining cable connectivity at the site because the
school is so far away from the existing terminal of the cable
connection. Our building was not wired because at the onset of the
CIC initiative, it was not used as a school. The original cost to
bring cable to the building was $3,600.00, but because we are a
school, the amount was reduced to $1498.00 (cost reflects a discounted
amount for 250 feet). TMS would be responsible for paying the full
amount in advance of any work. The amount covers construction,
restoration, and installation. Comcast will obtain all permits and
permissions.
Comcast has offered some concessions--free internet and email, and
basic cable which has all of the educational channels, History,
Discovery, Military, etc.
Identifiable obstacles to acquiring CIC at TMS include:
1) whether TMS has $1500.00 to dedicate to the cost of CIC, given
other financial obligations.
2) We will have spent $1500.00, but we will not be able to take the
CIC with us when we move.
3) The landlord has made our tenancy contentious by withholding
permissions.
4) The County may not grant permission for construction
5) There may be delays in installation which may mean that there is no
service for at least part of the school year, even though monies have
already been expended.
Major benefits of CIC at TMS include:
1) fast internet connections and the presence of wireless capability
throughout the building. (Query: does TMS currently have wireless
capability? Is it consistent? Is it in the lounge?)
2) expanded email capability, including over 150 email accounts
3) access to phenominal teaching tools, Discovery Channel, History,
Military Channel, etc.
Unfortunately, I believe that the obstacles far outweigh the
benefits.
Consider United Streaming (see unitedstreaming.com) which is a product
of Discovery. A subscription is aobut $700.00 per year and could be
covered through the technology fee. There is a 30 day free trial
availalbe. The programs there are specifically designed for the
classroom and include other media downloads. Since it is a
subscription, it goes where we are.
Robin:
Eventhough we already have cable connectivity in the EDS room and some of the channles you have mentioned and "business class" internet service (wireless access only requires a wireless modem?), how is CIC different?
I'm available next week (Mon-Wed) to do a preliminary walk through of TMS so everyone knows what we have and what we don't.
