How to know if the connection with the tmate server is alive

Hi,

Is there any/preferred way to ask tmate client if a current session is being able to syncronize with the tmate server.

I'm currently implementing a user interface for openning and monitoring a tmate session
In which I would like to show a message if the connection is lost for any reason.

If the connection is lost then tmate client will trigger the reconnection protocol. So in other words: is there any way to ask tmate if the reconnection protocol is taking place?
