Now that I am older and wiser, and long past the stage of trying every
supplement under the sun to "gain muscle", "burn fat" or have
"ultimate workouts", I take any product with such claims with a grain
of salt.
About a year ago, I did decide to give a product from Supplement
Direct a shot. I've ordered my whey protein, creatine and glutamine
supplements from these guys for years. I not only appreciate the
quality and price of their self-branded products, but also the no
frills and relatively low hype they put on them.
"Reps" is a pre-workout powder that you take 30 minutes before you
train. While I am not overly excited that it contains some
artificial colors and flavors, it is a small price to pay since you
only take it before workouts, and it is a small serving size. Reps
mixes with water, tastes good and the price is right.
The marquee active ingredients are: Creatine Monohydrate, Arginine
Alpha-Ketoglutarate (AKG), L-Citrulline Malate, Beta Alanine, Caffeine
and Taurine.
In a nutshell, the combination of these substances in beneficial
doses, increases muscular energy, delays fatigue and creates the
optimal environment for hypertrophy (muscle growth).
One note: While Reps contains some caffeine, it serves more so as a
metabolic enhancer rather than an ergogenic aid (energy enhancer). A
metabolic enhancer helps open blood vessels and increase circulation
to help drive the other active ingredients (i.e. creatine, etc.)
through your bloodstream.
I've been using it for a year and recognize the product's positive
effects. Don't get me wrong, I am not lifting cars over my head or
any other superhuman feat of strength. However, I do feel it gives me
an edge to complete that extra rep or set where I am normally tapped
out. You also get a great muscle pump which is proof that you are
getting maximum blood flow to the muscle groups being trained.
