After working with FreeChat the application hasn't been updated in a while and it's buggy. The best solution is to open Whatsapp web in Google Chrome. Then go to the 3 dot menu -> Save and Share -> Install Whatsapp Web. This saves the Whatsapp web as an individual application that will have its own dock icon and work exactly as the old Whatsapp. Give it a try, it's a great solution.
It worked for a bit but then it crashed again so I decided to use Opera's Whatsapp sidebar feature since the browser is open anyway. Works a treat and doesn't use as much CPU/resources as the app so depending on the browser you're using, I'd rather go for this option.
It seems that while older versions of WhatsApp can be downloaded and installed, when activated, the program automatically looks for the latest update and there's no way to stop it doing that. The result is the same old message that an upgrade in OS is required and since I'm running a perfectly functional but apparently outdated Mac mid 20212 MacBook Air with Catalina, there is no other option but to use the web version of WhatsApp. Sigh.
What I noticed though is, that when the desktop version crashed my phone still tried to connect to the macbook in terms of linked devices and I ended up having 4 connections from the same macbook pro so keep an eye out...
I have automatic updates and check for updates unticked in my macbook pro / Big Sur 2013. I've downloaded an older version of WhatsApp - still when i try to start the app it checks for updates and won't load.
Had the same problem. The only versin that worked for me is 2.2353.64 which I was able to recover using Time Machine. But this really sucks, every time that WhatsApp releases an update, this happens. I'm using WhatsApp web instead and using the feature "Download App" from Chrome which allow me to have the WhatsApp web as an independent window and right now it works better than the official desktop app for Catalina. I fact, now I can use the play pause button for my music which the desktop app seems to damage once is open.
I still got WhatsApp Desktop version 2.2353.64 my operating system supports current WhatsApp but I still use this app and it works perfect without any issues. Idk if I can share the file here but I would be glad to help you.
Your suggestion seemed quite logical, so I followed the directions you posted and disabled the automatic update option. I even tried consecutively loading three older versions but each time the prompt would not allow any alternatives other than to update before proceeding with opening WhatsApp.
Create machines, make them a vital part of your daily life, then force you to continually upgrade a perfectly good piece of equipment in order for it to continue to function by not releasing versions of new software compatible with old equipment.
The Macbook is a well-made computer. I take care of my things, so mine (mid-2012) is in good shape. There is no reason to replace it, other than the fact that the processor won't support newer versions of OSX and the associated apps.
I purchased a new battery and upgraded my Hard Drive two years ago, as it pretty much died (at least that's what the MacStore "Genius" said). I've since been able to access the old HD on a "sled" using it as an external HD. But the new one has several times the capacity and is, well, new.
Same with my iPhone. It still works, and does what I need it to do (be a phone, text device, browser, camera, and iPod replacement). But, it will soon be obsolete, as I can no longer update the iOS and most apps will leave my version off their upgrades.
I feel you 100%. Began switching away to Google for this very reason 2022. Mac user for nearly 40 years, for design, aesthetic and intuitive functionality. The iPhone killed it all (sorry Steve, it was a great invention).
I was using my last macbook until it literally died (after 'updating'). It's a shame that we feel the need to replace or trade-in the machine that could be made to work. Don't throw it away though! Sell it on eBay. There are always people refurbishing macbooks and everything else.....
I have NOT updated macbook at all since I bought it in 2020. I lost 'everything' with my previous macbook in the process of 'updating' (with Apple technical support assisting me the whole way through!) and I am so scared of any updates. I suppose there is no other way - ? (These seems to be no older version of WhatsApp available as far as I could see.) I'm just not up to date with any changes and really puzzles me one day after one hour, green logo just went grey (do people like me exist? I really hate updating......and avoid any updates if at all possible) Thank you for offering solutions though. I really must try.
Well guess what, mine is a 2009 Mac Pro. I've upgraded some parts thru the years and it keeps working like wonders. Except of course, because of some companies (including apple) discontinuing software, some of which I paid good money for.
I do not have a Windows machine, so I have not been able to test anything there. But I ask for Windows version-detection as well, for the sake of my current and future team members (no current team members with Windows).
**EDIT** After reviewing the Homebrew cask package, it seems that the version returned by brew info --cask whatsapp has to be manually updated via a git pull request after a whatsapp update is released. The below method may not be correct just after a whatsapp update. The browser method above will always return the latest version however.
If you download the app but do not install, do a properties on the (details tab) on the exe file as I did, for Windows 64bit, currently it is 0.4.315, probably can do this for the mac version using a mac PC.
WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging apps in the world, with billions of users. It allows people to connect and communicate with each other easily, no matter where they are located. Recently, a new version called NA7 WhatsApp has been released, offering some exciting features that enhance the user experience even further.
NA7 WhatsApp takes privacy seriously and offers enhanced settings to ensure your conversations remain private and secure. With this feature, you have more control over who can see your profile picture, status updates, last seen timestamp, and read receipts. You can choose to share these details only with your contacts or select specific individuals for added privacy. This feature gives you peace of mind knowing that your personal information is protected from unwanted eyes.
Group chats play an essential role in keeping friends connected as well as facilitating collaboration among colleagues or teammates working on projects together. Recognizing this importance, NA7 WhatsApp includes advanced group management tools designed specifically for seamless communication within groups.
Both NA7 WhatsApp and the official version share a similar user interface design, making it easy for users to navigate through various options. The layout is simple yet intuitive in both applications.
One significant difference between NA7 WhatsApp and the official version lies in updates. The original app receives regular updates from its developers, ensuring bug fixes, performance improvements, and new feature additions. On the other hand, modified versions like NA7 may not receive frequent updates or support from developers as they are created by independent individuals or groups.
In conclusion, NA7 WhatsApp is a popular messaging app that offers various features to enhance communication and connectivity. With its user-friendly interface and wide range of functionalities, it has become a preferred choice for millions of users worldwide.
However, there are certain recommendations that can further improve the overall experience on NA7 WhatsApp. Firstly, it would be beneficial if the developers focus on enhancing the security measures within the app. While end-to-end encryption is already in place, additional layers of protection could help safeguard user data even more effectively.
Furthermore, introducing new customization options such as themes or personalized backgrounds would add an element of personalization to chats and make them visually appealing. This feature has been well-received by other messaging apps and implementing it in NA7 WhatsApp could attract more users.
I am not interested in how they have an initial handshake( might be communicating with whatsapp servers) nor how they sync data so fast for chatting (might be using Open sockets directly from device to client).
I am curious as to how the app works in Background on iOS . AFAIK running a background Intent Service is pretty simple. But not for iOS. iOS allows only up to 30 seconds after the app is shut down normally.
No app in iOS can be long alive in background with a keep-alive socket, or guaranteed to wake by remote notifications except those using VoIP background mode (OT: and IIRC Bluetooth background modes).
So either Apple waives WhatsApp the use of VoIP background mode for purpose other than WhatsApp Call, or WhatsApp happens to get away from the "use your phone to sync" architecture and does something new for the iPhones.
As per the docs the app can remain in the background performing finite updates to the App. You can continue extending the background process one after the other. Look into Perform finite-length tasks. I think killing the app from background still executes registered actions by the system.
As mentioned in #32112433 by Steven Darbey this is most likely implemented using the new iOS 8 PushKit Service which includes a VoIP service notification type, allowing applications to resume from background. A misuse of the API for non-VoIP purposes, but Apple apparently putting a blind eye on it.
