Professor Andre Kushniruk from University of Victoria, Canada, is
visiting the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Aalto
School of Science. Professor Kushniruk will present a lecture on
“Improving the Safety of Health Information Systems: Methods and
Advances”
The lecture will be held at 12 o’clock noon at the lecture hall of
SoberIT, Innopoli 2, 4th floor, Tekniikantie 14, Espoo.
Abstract of the lecture:
In the late 1990’s research studies were published demonstrating the
value of health information systems (HIS) in reducing the number of
medical errors while at the same time improving the quality of patient
care. However, a growing body of research has emerged documenting
occurrences where information technology leads to or facilitates
medical errors (i.e. technology-induced errors). Over the past several
years, researchers have identified that with the introduction of HIS,
there have emerged opportunities to introduce new types of medical
errors (i.e. negative unintended consequences arising from HIS design
and implementation. The presentation will provide a description of the
key research methodologies that have been used to identify, document
and illuminate how technology-induced errors occur in clinical
settings. This will include a discussion about research in applying
and adapting methods from usability engineering and clinical
simulations for identifying, rectifying and preventing technology-
induced error, prior to widespread deployment of health information
systems. Experiences in application of these methods across the System
Development Life Cycle (SDLC) will be provided and implications of the
work for patient safety will be discussed.
About Prof. Kushniruk:
Dr. Andre Kushniruk is a Professor at the School of Health Information
Science at the University of Victoria in Canada. Dr. Kushniruk
conducts research in a number of areas including usability
engineering, electronic health records, evaluation of the effects of
information technology, human-computer interaction in healthcare and
other domains as well as cognitive science. His work is known
internationally as he has published widely in the area of health
informatics and he has advised on variety of national and
international committees and projects. He focuses on developing new
methods for the evaluation of health information technology and
studying human-computer interaction in healthcare. Dr. Kushniruk holds
undergraduate degrees in Psychology and Biology, as well as an MSc in
Computer Science from McMaster University and a PhD in Cognitive
Psychology from McGill University.
On Friday 4-Nov-2011 Prof. Kushniruk will act as the opponent in the
public examination of Johanna Kaipio’s dissertation entitled
“”Usability in Healthcare: Overcoming the Mismatch between Information
Systems and Clinical Work”. More information about the dissertation is
