Starring Peter Lorre, the film was written by

Thea von Harbou (Metropolis author & screenplay)

and Fritz Lang.

Lang rated this his best work. His first sound film, it

is a noir thriller about a serial killer. Based partly on

events in 1920s Germany 'M' explores community

anxiety and mob violence, with disturbing insights

into the criminal's motivation.
