China, 1931, is experiencing civil war. A British Army captain and brain surgeon is on the same
train as a famous courtesan, Shanghai Lily, his former lover. Their meeting is set against the
back-drop of conflict. While the narrative is loosely based on a 1923 incident in which a
Shandong warlord captured the Shanghai to Beijing express train, the film was notable for its
sumptuous effects and being a vehicle for the ultra-alluring Marlene Dietrich.
Although unsurprisingly orientalising, many of the white characters in the film are seen as
flawed and racist and Dietrich described as 'surprisingly feminist' in her dominating presence.
