Having aligned materials is even more crucial now, given that most states are expected to administer assessments based on the common core for the first time next spring. Yet according to a recent survey by the Education Week Research Center, fewer than one-third of educators say they have access to high-quality textbooks aligned with the new standards.
The new nonprofit, EdReports.org, has assembled a team of 19 educators to evaluate the alignment of major textbooks and curricula to the common core. It will start with the following 21 K-8 math instructional materials.
Some university-based researchers have waded into alignment studies as well. William Schmidt, the co-director of the education policy center at Michigan State University, in East Lansing, has analyzed several dozen K-8 instructional series, and Mr. Polikoff of USC conducted a smaller study with 4th grade math textbooks.
The 19-member review team for EdReports.org includes educators who have worked for or with Student Achievement Partners, a group co-founded by several lead writers of the common core; the teacher-training organization Math for America; the Illustrative Mathematics Project, led by common-core writer William McCallum; and EQuIP.
Sophie: The book relates maths to other subjects that a student may be studying such as geography, business studies or psychology. There are clear worked examples with callouts that provide extra support, and short exercises on each section so there are plenty of opportunities for students to practise their new skills.
Roger: Students should be alert for the maths that they will need in their other subjects. The same is true for teachers but they will need to know about more subjects than any individual student. A world full of data covers 10 subjects, so teachers may well find it helpful reading.

The teachers were in town to attend the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics annual conference. The exhibit hall featured endless booths stocked with Common Core textbooks, Common Core legos, Common Core geometry sets, Common Core MOOCs (which stands for massive open online courses). There were even flying robots that vendors said could help children learn the Common Core.
In Louisiana, state officials are trying to help schools and districts sift through all the new curricula and textbooks. Two years ago, the state was hoping to purchase new textbooks aligned with the Common Core. Officials conducted an extensive review of existing materials. The results were discouraging, says Rebecca Kockler, the assistant superintendent of academic content at the Louisiana Department of Education.
Not surprisingly, Louisiana districts have flocked to the few Tier 1 vendors. But Kockler says the department, which has been focused on grading textbook and curriculum programs, is just starting to grade other products. That means schools are largely on their own when deciding what legos to buy or which MOOCs to sign up for.

New educational standards have hit another snag with recent reports showing that educational materials marketing themselves as Common Core math textbooks don't actually prepare students to meet Common Core standards.
Evaluations of four mainstream math textbooks found none of the materials fully met criteria for the Common Core, a set of shared expectations for what students should know and be able to do in reading and math, according to an independent review from EdReports.org, a nonprofit group that reviews Common Core education materials.
"Rigorous field testing confirms success for students whether used as a core math program or intensive instruction for students at-risk," McGraw-Hill said in a statement. "When implemented with fidelity, Connecting Math Concepts Comprehensive Edition results in significant, positive results in mathematics achievement."
This is the first of two books students will require for the completion of their HL Mathematics course. Upon the completion of this book, students progress to the particular HL textbook for their course: either Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL, or Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation HL. Pervasive inequality. A bold claim, but that's the inescapable conclusion of more than 20 years of examining mathematics and science standards, student achievement, textbooks, standardized tests, and classroom content coverage. In mathematics, for instance, students are exposed to widely varying content not only across states and school districts but within schools. Such inequities in content coverage deny students equal learning opportunities. By the time they enter middle and high school, those students fortunate enough to have been challenged with rigorous, focused, and coherent content in the early grades are placed into courses that continue to challenge them, while their peers who were not exposed to such content are tracked into lower-level courses. And so the differences in learning opportunities that contribute to the achievement gap only continue to grow.
Considerable pressure is on textbook publishing companies, which must quickly develop materials compatible with the CCSS-M. US textbooks have long been problematic; much longer and less focused than those used in other countries, they implicitly encourage teachers to teach all topics in a fairly summary fashion (a feature of the "mile-wide, inch-deep" phenomenon). Unfortunately, textbooks serve as a key intermediary between the standards and classroom teaching.10 Inexperienced and underprepared teachers often rely on the materials provided by textbooks, and in some cases even follow them literally, as some school districts expect their teachers to do, beginning on page 1 and moving in strict accordance with the book. Better prepared and more experienced teachers may recognize the problems with their textbooks and, when permitted, may reorganize the material presented in the textbook or search for supplementary materials. Textbooks thus play a key role in the implementation of any standards, including the Common Core.
