When I use infrared clean on C41 film on a Epson V750 running under Vuescan I get an apparent offset between the dust objects at the patch of photo to which infrared clean is being applied. In the final result I see both the healed spot and the dust object, with an offset between the two.

Thanks for the suggestion. I did contact sup...@hamrick.com and got an initial reply asking for more information. I replied with more information six days ago but did not get a response back, so I thought I would see if anyone here might know what is going on.

Les, I have had the V750 and vuescan for several years, but I haven't used the V750 very much, and I haven't tried infrared clean on the V750 until very recently. However, infrared clean does work on my FS4000US running under vuescan.

Actually, the current version is 9.5.07 - are you sure about that version number? 9.3.x was two years ago, for example. If it is 9.0.58, that's years old and I'd try a newer version. There have been a bunch of changes, including substantial improvements to infrared cleaning, in the past few years.

I'd just make sure you keep the installer around for the version that's currently working for you before upgrading (I always end up appending the release number to the end of the file when I download a new version, and keep a few versions back in case I missed a problem until I try to use a feature with a particular scanner).

I think I know what might have happened with the VueScan version. I recently had the computer repaired, and they installed a new hard disk and moved all of my files and and programs to the new disk. Possibly the recent VueScan version did not get moved, though I am not sure if this was the cause of the VueScan version not being current.

I've found that Vuescan's IR clean doesn't work on any flatbed I've tried it with. It works great with my Canon FS4000US and Nikon LS-2000 though. The difference is that the dedicated film scanners communicate better with Vuescan. Or at least that's my suspicion. I've asked Hamrick a few times to try to work on realigning layers once they're on the computer and he just doesn't see the need. Says I'm the only person who sees any problems so it must be me.

Hi There.

I was wondering if anyone can help me out here.

I bought a Nikon V ED with the SA-21 and the MA-21 Slide Adapter.

I tested the V ED and the strip feeder on my laptop (MacBook) with Vuescan and it worked perfectly. When I got home and tried the exact same set up, all I get from Vuescan is "The scanner is not ready. Insert film into scanner".

When I try and feed the negative strip into the feeder, it does go in part way and then it spits it out.

The MA-21 slide adapter works perfectly and scans slides well.

I'm not sure what is going on? Could it be that the SA-21 has just died on the way home? Or has this something to do with the software?

I've tried reinstalling Vuescan with no luck. Even tried Silverfast and the scanner is still not recognised when the SA-21 is attached. Tried a different USB cable as well but still no luck.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Cheers !!

Today i installed my epson xp-201 printer/scanner to scan some photos. I was able to scan once, but when i want to scan another photo, it never worked again.
When i ran scanimage -L, i saw the scanner just once too, and it never appeared again. I changed the usb cable, and rebooted the system several times with same results.
But, vuescan works perfect. It's so weird...

I have been trying to find a solution for a scanner problem I have for a Canon LIDE 210 which won't work when plugged into a usb3 port but works fine when plugged into a usb2 port on an older machine - using xsane from GIMP. I am going to try to test with vuescan but I wonder if your scanner was connected via a usb3 port? If so it might indicate a corresponding issue to the one that I had. I have seen a Ubuntu posting that vuescan worked where other scanning software didn't so I was interested to see if there is a common underlying cause here?

I tested vuescan today with my Canoscan LIDE 210 - and it works fine when connected to a laptop with USB3 connection, where the scanner jams solid with xsane. This is interesting and seems to indicate a bug in xsane when using USB3. Maybe it is worth putting in a bug report upstream to the sane-devel list.

Having to do this as root is not exactly an ideal solution! However in my case I think that the problems are not yet triaged and there are many reported issues running scanners with usb3 ports on the machine they are connected to, with analogous posts on forums for a number of different linux distributions. I have also more recently been engaged in a developer thread on the xsane dev list and provided diagnostics as best I can, but it is still not clear whether there are issues with the usb code in the kernel, the libusb code or within sane itself. I was able to get at the packet stream whilst the scanner failed using usb debugging and capturing the stream with wireshark. However the developers have not been able to tie down what the problem is so this is ongoing.

OK in that case your issue is a separate one to the problem of using usb3 ports. I seem to remember some time back that there were issues with permissions that led to only being able to scan using root and not a normal user but I thought there were solutions posted in other threads to that issue. Perhaps a search will lead to the relevant threads? However have a look at the libusb section in -usb

Hi, i've got 7200i se and when i'm trying to use isrd something werid happens. It doesn't work and creates weird vertical lines on scan.
When I tried silverfast (but demo version) everything was fine and scanner was working differently from vuescan. Scanner sounds not so squeaky as on vuescan. I bought it without silverfast and i have vuescan and i don't want to buy it if it's not necesarry. Thanks for help!

i had trouble with my PlusTek OpticFilm 7200 -- it would preview with 'patchy' colours and I had to close it and Vuescan then open all again -- then on scans the image would be distorted --- then I got an August Vuescan Newsletter - in there it mentioned 'sorting troubles with PlusTek Scanners ' in Version 9-7-30 -- so i upgraded and got version 9-7-31 and on a Test Scan it worked much better !

Sometimes on Colour NEGATIVE Film the first 'Preview scan is horrible with dark patchy colours and lines then I 'Preview' it AGAIN and they have Vanished and it looks good and scans well Strange == does not happen with Colour Reversal or B&W Film.

A difficult 2020 that has blended into a difficult 2021 has made it harder for many of us to get outside and shoot, but that doesn't mean you have to neglect your photography. If you're like me, you probably still have years' worth of unscanned slides and negatives waiting to be tended to some rainy day, and a COVID lockdown gives you a golden opportunity.

But are you better off using the software that came with your scanner, or should you shell out for a third-party alternative to get the best results? Before I rolled up my sleeves and started scanning, I wanted to answer this question for myself.

All three applications were tested with Windows 10 version 1909 on a 2018 Dell XPS 15 9570 alongside an Epson Perfection V850 Pro scanner. SilverFast SE Plus costs $99, although it was included free in the bundle with our Epson V850 Pro. VueScan Professional, meanwhile, is ordinarily $99.95.

Since I'm looking at this from the perspective of film scanning, I'm limiting my comparisons solely to scanning of positive and negative strip film and slides, and won't be considering features like document or photo print scanning, copying, OCR, and the like.

As is often the case with software from hardware manufacturers, Epson Scan's Professional Mode user interface feels quite dated and somewhat unintuitive. It's split across five floating control panels that, together, don't leave much room to preview your slides, yet still offers fewer controls than its third-party rivals.

Optional Full Auto and Home modes simplify things, but also hide many features altogether. And it's also sometimes a little buggy. For example, no matter how I configured Windows' resolution and scaling, its un-resizable configuration dialog overflowed its borders, preventing me from being able to do things like reset app defaults.

SilverFast has only two operating modes: WorkflowPilot or Manual. WorkFlowPilot only allows single-photo scanning, and takes you through the process step by step. Some choices feel odd, though: For example it won't allow you to simply scan a standard JPEG.

Manual mode gives access to everything at once, but is very busy and unnecessarily confusing. Button colors vary for no logical reason, and active functions are indicated only with a tiny red dot. Help is provided throughout, but the many (and often redundant) buttons linking to abbreviated PDF manuals and numerous lengthy tutorial videos make its interface even more cluttered.

I also found it prone to making me wait for preview scans more than its rivals, and cancelling a batch scan can be extremely tedious as it makes you separately cancel every remaining frame, one by one. This was my least-favorite interface of the bunch.

[Edit: I've since learned that SilverFast batch scans can be canceled entirely by alt-clicking the cancel button. This is, however, not obvious, although it's mentioned in one of 13 separate PDF manuals for SilverFast SE Plus 8 on the company's website.]
