My most used software repair disk is TechTools Pro. I have about six versions and probably use it on half the machines I get in. It's fair. Locks up if it hits bad sectors. Takes forever to optimize files and volumes. I would be interested to hear what you use even if it just does one thing. I've used different programs over the years but the cost of keeping them all current hurts. I've used SuperDuper -pocket.com/SuperDuper/S... for a few years but just bought the upgrade last week, it cut the dup time in half, for $27.95 I was very pleased.
I think SuperDuper! is great software, I use it regularly to make a bootable clone of my entire drive for safekeeping - yes the Smart Copy feature really works well too. I always also tell people that in my experience the developer of SuperDuper provides terrific support, if you need it - even if you're only using the free version. The free version will do everything most people need but I found support so great I went and paid for the full version.
You can try Drive Genius 2 for free in a trail they have available. They have cloning, defrag, drive slim, disk repair, and a whole bunch of other neat little options. I was impressed with the UI as well. I tried the trail and immediately purchased.
Applejack for running some disk maintenance for use in single-user mode. there's also an optionally installed memory test (you MUST install memtest when you first install Applejack, there's no way to add the memtest later) - it seems to do a pretty thorough test of your RAM. Note: the latest version Applejack (1.5.1) hasn't yet been updated for OS X 10.6
I agree with bac about onyx for maintenance, and applejack for via the command prompt, however my personal favorite hard disk tool is Prosoft's Data Rescue, I attest from personal experience that it is a great tool, very useful. Great data recovery, can do some disk repair, and does cloning as well as a variety of other things.
It really is great, it saved me when my main machines internal failed and I hadn't gotten around to fixing the time machine problem it had (corrupted sparse bundle image, very annoying, seems i'm not the only one unfortunately).
I use and have an update subscription to TechTool Pro. That is my work horse and then Disk Warrior is also great for stuff that TechTool Pro doesn't fix. But Apple's Disk Utility is the first line of defense for me.
A bad sector on a hard drive is simply a tiny cluster of storage space of the hard drive that appears to be defective. The sector won't respond to read or write requests. Bad sectors can occur on both traditional magnetic hard drives and modern solid-state drives, such as a hard drive, external HDD, USB flash drive, pen drive, or a memory card. There are two types of bad sectors: one resulting from physical damage that can't be repaired, and the other resulting from software errors that can be fixed. The common reasons that would lead to bad sectors include long-term use, malware, virus attack, scratch, and fall apart.
If your hard disk is severely damaged, you should send it to a drive repair center immediately. In some cases, data recovery software and bad sector repair software could quickly remove the bad sectors without losing data on the drive. We will introduce a brilliant data recovery tool and how to use Flobo Hard Disk Repair software in the following parts.
The first thing you should do before repairing hard drive bad sectors is to find and restore existing data. Here we recommend EaseUS free data recovery software. It would quickly scan and list your lost data on the damaged hard drive, and enable you to recover data in one-click. Let's check what else EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard can do:
If EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard doesn't find much of your data, follow Part 2 and apply Flobo Hard Disk Repair to repair existing bad sectors on your hard drive. And retry EaseUS data recovery software again to find as many lost files as you can.
Here we arrived at the specialized Flobo Hard Disk Repair, which is designed to fix hard disks damaged because of bad sectors. Other than the ability to repair damaged hard disks without affecting or changing existing data, one more brilliant feature of Flobo Hard Disk Repair is noticeable that it can check S.M.A.R.T. information, predict possible failure, read the current state of various life-critical parameters, and advise users to backup data and replace the hard disk.
Here is a tutorial video of how to repair hard drive bad sectors with Flobo Hard Disk Repair. You can go to its official website to download Flobo Hard Disk Repair and follow the steps introduced in this video to repair the hard drive from bad sectors.
According to the latest annual survey of hard drive reliability by Backblaze, a provider of cloud backup services, the annualized failure rate for modern hard drives is around 2 percent. This means that if we have a group of 50 people, with every person in the group using two hard drives (perhaps one inside a personal computer and one inside a laptop), then one of those 50 individuals is going to lose all the data stored on the hard drives within a year.
As with so many other things in life, preparation is the key to success even when it comes to hard drive repair and recovery. If you know why hard drives fail and are familiar with some of the most popular hard drive repair and recovery solutions, you have much better chances of seeing your files again.
Now that you know what causes hard drive failure, we have for you a list of top 10 best HDD repair software tools that you can use to analyze, avoid, and solve virtually all common hard drive issues.
Disk Drill is a powerful and user-friendly hard drive recovery tool that handles many data loss scenarios, from accidentally deleted files to lost partitions, corrupted drives, and even unbootable hard drives.
Clonezilla is one of the most useful free hard drive repair software tools. It allows you to easily create full partition and disk backups, which can be deployed on other computers. Clonezilla supports far more file systems than most IT professionals can name, and it even features some basic boot repair tools.
GParted is a free, graphical partition editor that you can use to resize, copy, and move partitions without data loss or file corruption. You may want to shrink a partition to create space for another operating system or a backup partition. GParted is part of many other hard disk tools, such as Clonezilla or Partclone. It can also be downloaded from the official website as a small bootable GNU/Linux distribution for x86 based computers and used from a USB flash drive.
While Windows comes with a built-in hard disk repair tool capable of fixing bad sectors and file access issues caused by them, it pales in comparison with HDD Regenerator. This special-purpose hard drive repair tool has the ability to detect physical bad sectors on a hard disk drive surface and repair them a recovery technology called Hysteresis loops generator. Originally developed by Dmitriy Primochenko, Hysteresis can make unreadable data readable again, and HDD Regenerator makes it easy to apply it on Windows XP/Vista/7/8/10.
Many strains of malware, such as ransomware, can prevent you from accessing important files or even being able to boot up your computer at all. The good news is that Windows comes with a capable antivirus, called Windows Defender, and it takes just a few simple steps to instruct it to scan your entire computer:
Sometimes, hard disk issues are caused by faulty drivers and firmware. For example, a bug in the firmware of some SAS SSDs (Serial-Attached SCSI solid-state drives) produced by Hewlett Packard can cause the hard drives to fail after reaching 40,000 hours of operation (roughly 4 years).
If you want to format your system drive, then we recommend begin the installation of the Windows operating system and choose the Custom install option. You will then be able to format or delete any partition.
If none of the above-described fixes have solved your problems, then you should rule out the possibility that some other component, such as your motherboard is to blame for them. You can easily do that by disconnecting your hard disk and connecting it to a different computer.
Hard disks are mechanical devices, and, like all mechanical devices, they can fail without notice. Some hard disk failures are entirely avoidable, but many others are governed only by luck and chance.
FAQCan hard drives be repaired? Yes, hard drives are repairable. But keep in mind that it is not recommended to try to fix a hard dry by yourself since it is very easy to make things worse. If you want to repair a hard drive, the best option for you is to resort to a professional service.
The price for repairing a hard drive depends on the hard drive type, how severe the damage is, and, of course, on the repair service you choose. In general, the cost starts somewhere around $200 and can even go up to $1000 or more.
Bad sectors are little clusters of data on your hard disk that cannot be read. More than that, though, they are the potential to cause real damage to your hard drive (catastrophic failure) if they build up over time, stressing your read arm. Bad sectors are fairly common with normal computer use and the imperfections of the world we live in; however, there are several simple steps you can take to prevent HDD bad sectors and to repair any that you do have. Here is a step-by-step guide. What is a sector, and how are HDD bad sectors created?
If your hard disk has got Hard Bad Sectors then only option is to replace your hard disk. Soft bad sectors however can be repaired. One good tool is Windows build-in Check Disk Tool but sometimes it might not be able to repaid bad sectors. In such scenarios, you have to use a specialized software to repaid these bad sectors.
