In Vastu Shastra, one of the most frequently asked question is how to use the compass to find the facing of the house? It is an important question because the ancient building science of vastu shastra is entirely direction-based and directions in vastu shastra are held as the energy centers.

Therefore, if your compass reading is inaccurate then you cannot make your house vastu compliant as a difference of even 3-4 degrees will make the entire calculation of 16 vastu zones completely wrong. It will also make it difficult for you to uncover the root cause of the problems.

Hence, in order to apply all the vastu principles properly you need to find out the accurate directions of your house. It can be a very confusing and difficult task in the beginning to determine the directions.

In the olden days people used to see the shadow of the sun to determine the directions. In the modern and technologically advanced world we can use the magnetic device called compass to check the directions very minutely.

In the picture given below you can see that each of the direction is located on a particular degree on compass. For instance, North is located at 0 or 360 degrees, the East is located at 90 degrees, and 180 on compass is indicating the South direction.

Now the next most important step is to grid the map of your house and locate the main entrance as well as mark all the 16 vastu zones on your floor plan. But before we do that we need to find out the exact center point of the house. (Click Here To Read- @moneyvastu)

There are total of 32 possible entrances according to vastu shastra. After dividing a circle of 360, you will get 32 entrances each covering 11.25. Every cardinal direction (North, East, South, and West) is divided into 8 possible entrances. For instance, 8 entrances for North (N1 to N8), 8 entrances for East (E1 to E8), 8 entrances for South (S1 to S8), 8 entrances for West (W1 to W8).

Positive flow of energy in all the 16 vastu zones of your house is extremely important to get the desired results because this flow of energy deeply affects your emotions as well as your thoughts. Therefore, it is important to locate the 16 vastu zones on the map and make them vastu friendly. (Click Here To Read- @maingatevastu)

But, before we determine 16 vastu zones on your house map, we need to understand the basic directions and their degree readings. Basically, 16 vastu zones are composed of four cardinal, four inter-cardinal and eight secondary inter-cardinal directions. Each of them is located on a particular degree on the compass.

First of all, we will find out cardinal directions and their degrees on compass. In a compass, there are four cardinal directions (North, East, South, and West) each separated by 90 degrees. These cardinal directions are:

These cardinal directions are further divided into four inter-cardinal (ordinal) directions. Each of the inter-cardinal direction is placed halfway between two cardinal directions. For instance, one of the inter-cardinal directions North-East (45) is located exactly halfway between the two cardinal directions North (0) and East (90). This applies for every inter-cardinal direction. Here are four inter-cardinal directions and their degrees on a compass:

These cardinal, inter-cardinal and secondary inter-cardinal directions are known as 16 vastu zones. Now, we will mark these vastu zones on your house map. For that, divide your house into 16 Vastu Zones each covering 22.5 degrees. Follow these steps to determine 16 Vastu Zones:

Hello Vijayalakshmi Ji, South facing house can be very auspicious, if some important vastu rules are properly followed. One of them is the location of the Main Entrance of your house. Main entrance in S-8 [between 214 to 225 on compass] is not considered good. It needs to be rectified. But, before that you need to make sure that your main entrance is in S-8.

Main door of our flat is N-W means when i am facing door from inside , compass shows north west. Is it okay ? We did interior for main entrance, which idols or any symbol can be used to decorate main door from outside.

Nirav Ji, your house entrance at 276 means you have the 'Varuna' entrance according to vastu. It makes the person over ambitious. It is not a bad entrance, but it also does not bring much positive results until the other aspects of your home are vastu compliant.

The pivotal Vastu compass is one of the most commonly used devices for Vastu. The magnetic needle is balanced on a pivot point so one has to place the pivotal vastu compass on the ground, or a level surface, in the centre of the house. Once on a level surface, the compass aligns itself automatically. The red arrow or a needle with a black or white end will point to the north and every other direction will be properly aligned.

The floating Vastu compass does not need to be placed on the ground. One just needs to stand in the centre of the house or plot while holding the vastu compass. Wait till the needle with the red tip stops moving and check if the needle aligns with the N mark. When using a floating Vastu compass, ensure that there are no magnetic or electromagnetic objects nearby.

Compasses today can be found on smartphones. Vastu compass functionality in phones and tablets is enabled by a sensor called a magnetometer, which is used to measure the direction of the magnetic fields. The sensor allows a phone to determine its orientation accurately. Phones that do not have a compass app can download Digital Field Compass for Android or Gaia GPS for iPhone and Android. However, when using a compass on your phone, ensure that it is properly calibrated. The vastu compass will rotate before coming into position with the direction you face. Check that the dial and the needle are in sync.

Always keep your vastu compass away from direct heat sources. Do not store a vastu compass near a magnet or electronic field. Over time, exposure can demagnetise the needle. Do not place your vastu compass in your pocket next to your cell phone.

To mark the four corners of your house, label them as points A, B, C, and D, and connect A to C and B to D. The centre point where these two lines intersect is the exact centre of your house. In case your house has a cut or extension in any corner, draw an imaginary line to make it square or rectangular before labelling the corners. Remember to avoid any magnetic interference from nearby objects such as your phone, laptop, car, metallic objects, or high-voltage power lines when using a magnetic compass for Vastu. Also, refrain from wearing jewellery or using a metal pen, as they may obstruct the compass reading.

The most important part of Vastu analysis is taking an accurate compass reading. Most Vastu experts suggest that a layman takes three readings. The first reading should be taken from the main gate facing towards the property. The second reading should be taken from the centre of the premise. The last reading must be taken from the far corner of the location. If you have inconsistent readings there may be some metallic or electrical interference or you may be standing close to metal objects.

Vastu and Feng Shui both believe that the centre of the home is where all the energies combine, making it the most important part of the house. Vastu Shastra and Feng Shui use the eight compass directions to determine placement and architecture and the five elements to attract positive energies. So, yes, a Vastu compass can also be used for Feng Shui.

* In order to be able to ascertain the accurate direction of a plot, it is essential to be able to read the compass accurately. Reading the compass correctly is also an art not mastered by all, although slight variation due to human error is negligible. There are two types of Vastu compass which is readily available in the market everywhere. They are Pivotal compass and floating compass. However, be it any kind of compass, the accuracy with which it is used depends on the vigilance of the user so as to ensure that there is no discrepancy in reading the direction marked correctly on it. One has to avoid parallax while reading the compass correctly. The difference between these two compasses is where the pivotal one displays the right direction of the plot automatically; the floating one has to align the direction with the colored tip of the needle to find out the North.

1. In case of the pivotal compass, there is a rotating disc on it with the name of the directions written on it as East, West, North and South. So, in order to determine the right direction, it is essential for one to get inside the house and stand right at the center if the plot with the compass on the floor. This will enable the pointers of the compass to showcase all the directions simultaneously.

2. As for the floating compass, it is used in a different manner as compared to the pivotal one. When using a floating compass, one needs to make sure there is no magnetic or electromagnetic object nearby or in your hand while you stand in the center of the plot with the compass in your hand and you need to wait till the compass settles down and becomes still. Once the pointer stops, you need to check the tip which always points to the North direction. Thereafter, you need to align the North, marked as N on the disc, right below the needle. The other directions also get settled and positioned as the compass is moved slowly.

3. To ensure accuracy in reading the compass, make sure not to carry a mobile phone while determining the directions through a Vastu compass. Also make sure to keep the pointer of the directions same both in the inside and outside of the plot. There might be variations in reading due to the presence of columns and beams which can be neglected. When it is said that the plot is East-facing, it would mean that the entrance door opens in the East direction and you are facing the West.
