Now there is nothing wrong with citing biblical passages in support of our views; in fact, I cannot see how we can avoid it or why we would want to. But proof-texting is different in that there is little or no exploration of, or elaboration on, the text itself. The text is its own authority simply because it exists and it requires no explanation or interpretation beyond the short text itself.

One big problem with proof-texting is that it only works in arguments between inerrantists who both hold to this assumption; proof-texting is of no benefit in discussion with a person who does not hold to inerrancy.

I might respond to a proof-text that includes the text (after placing it in its biblical context), but more often I ask for clarification on what the proof-texter intends me to understand from the text. The bottom line is that I do not find proof-texting persuasive.

I can understand why God would want to help you understand the seeming contradictions, and make things more clear to you, but why would he want to make you the few believers in an errant bible the only ones to be conveyed his truth, when he has the best selling book in print that rests on every coffee table in possibly the entire western world. Why would he not want his truth conveyed instead in his book especially if he intends to save everyone in the world as you guys apparently believe it.

Jerry, to deal with the last point first, we all inevitably underestimate God, since our minds are infinitesimally small by comparison with His. What mind other than His could conceive of the molecule DNA capable of producing all of the lifeforms that have ever existed here on earth, through the process of survival amidst the destructive events and conditions on the earth during its existence, and bring forth, in its time, mankind, a species capable of thinking and experiencing emotions, and therefore capable of relationship with God
Without error should mean perfect. We can often see the imperfect, but God is the only One who is able to judge what is perfect. As to what Paul meant, only he and God know.
God has controlled the content of the bible in the form that we have it. However, since it is not inerrant, we rely on God (or the action of the Holy Spirit, if you prefer to think of Him in that way) to show us what He wants us to accept as truth. If we grow Spiritually, He might change what He want us to accept as truth. He has certainly done that for me, because at first I believed that the bible was inerrant, but gradually it was revealed to me that it is not.

Chas have you ever considered that you may be proof texting from archeological history? Just asking, sure there are always people who will attempt to twist science and history, but truth seekers should avoid enhancing their cause. I have found much more archeological evidence for the existence of Nazareth prior to the birth of Jesus than those claiming any nonexistent evidence.

Jerry, If God is kind and loving, which I truly believe, it follows that He will take action that will minimise suffering, within the constraints that He chooses not to destroy, but gives us free will, both of which are necessary to bring forth from the earth beings capable of loving Him and having relationship with Him. The god in whom you seem to believe is capable of ordering people to destroy others, even to the extent of committing genocide, as shown in the bible in which you put your trust. Such a god cannot be described as kind or loving.

A proof text is a passage of scripture presented as proof for a theological doctrine, belief, or principle.[1] Prooftexting (sometimes "proof-texting" or "proof texting") is the practice of using quotations from a document, either for the purpose of exegesis, or to establish a proposition in eisegesis (introducing one's own presuppositions, agendas, or biases). Such quotes may not accurately reflect the original intent of the author,[2] and a document quoted in such a manner, when read as a whole, may not support the proposition for which it was cited.[3][4][5][6] The term has currency primarily in theological and exegetical circles.

Recently, I took a class on the New Testament use of the Old Testament. Before, I would just gloss over the scriptural references, I just assumed that they were being used right. It is scripture after all. However, this class made me look at the OT context, and I learned that the NT authors always had the context in mind. This not only showed me that they used it within context, but that the context strengthened their arguments and brought more significance to their use. Proof texting does the exact opposite. It is weakened by the context it is pulled from. Proof texting can sometimes lead to claims that are totally off from the meaning of the text. Even Satan used proof texting.

Learning to read the Bible in context is something we must not forget when reading the Bible. Whenever we disregard the context of Scripture, chances are, we would most likely end up misunderstanding and misinterpreting the Bible leading us to believe and teach what the Bible does not support after all. And that is what proof texting is all about.

Many times when someone discusses what the Bible teaches what they may use, even though they may be unaware of it, what is called Proof Text. Proof texting uses certain short passages, many times only a single verse, pulled from the Bible in support of a particular belief or doctrine.

The problem with this method is that the person who is Proof texting usually gives their selected verses a meaning that may be entirely different from what the writer intended. The Bible is written in such a way that most verses cannot be correctly understood in a stand-alone fashion. The context of a particular verse, who wrote it, the time period in which it was written, where did they write it, etc. is needed to arrive at what God intended it to convey.

Proof texting can easily lead to wrong conclusions regarding what is the truth of God. An argument or doctrinal stand that relies heavily on proof passages is ultimately considered weak. In fact, those who preach and teach others based on such special passages in Scripture are generally viewed negatively by true Biblical scholars and those who seriously study the word of God.

A better way of understanding the scriptures than through proof texting is through what is called Hermeneutics. This technical term simply refers to the process or method of carefully analyzing what a particular passage might mean.

Any interpretation of Biblical text needs to stand the test of what other related parts of Scripture have to say about what is studied. This is one of the foundational principles to studying God's word! Simply using one piece of text for proof texting a certain belief, and leaving out other relevant verses, is not honestly seeking to know the mind of God.

While texting can mean flight for some, for others it means fight. We find ourselves texting not when we are hiding, but when we are on the attack. There is something psychological about text messages; they naturally elicit a response. If you are like me, it takes discipline to ignore a text message. It takes even more discipline not to let an unsettling text message bore into my subconscious and unnerve me a whole afternoon. This pesky quality makes texting a pretty nasty tool for manipulation.

To cite a bible verse in APA style, it is important that you know some basic information such as the bible version, year, chapter number, verse number, and/or URL (uniform resource locator). The templates for in-text citations and reference list entry of a bible verse along with examples are given below:

My teenage sons were caught up in a crude, inappropriate, sexually suggestive group chat with 2 other boys. It had me heartbroken as a mom to see what was being shared and discussed through their fingertips. After toiling and fretting for months, we finally decided to remove our boys from this chat, but it was a very hard decision. The worst part was how unconcerned the other parents were when we brought up the highly sexualized content their younger middle school son was sharing. Lord knows, this article is a nice exhortation for teenagers to consider before blindly texting questionable content. Thank you for sharing.

Have you ever wanted a unique way to get youth excited about Bible study? You have found it. This class uses the very thing youth use all day long: texting. Using this method, youth can get involved with the Bible in the same way or similar way that they communicate with their friends

The texting classes are arranged Monday through Saturday, so Sunday is a free day. Most leaders/youth leaders send out a different text each morning, but you can feel free to be creative. For example, some leaders create some type of chat room and post it there each morning. Students will join during the day and comment on that day's text.

Along with all the sweet nothings, spicy texts, and sentimental words, I think sending scriptures to encourage my husband edifies your marriage to a greater level so I always try to make sure I send bible verses every so often.

Critics commonly make the mistake of "proof-texting," that is, considering a text as "proof" of a biblical truth without taking context and other passages into consideration. Plucking this verse alone out of Psalm 139 and giving it ultimate credence would be proof-texting at its worst. In this case, as in many cases of supposed contradictions, context is key to understanding David's thought, expressed in such absolute, impassioned terms.

I guess this may have been prompted by our conversation last week. This is very helpful for me. Would you say that an accurate summary of this concept is that the place for proof-texting is that of validation and confirmation of doctrine? (and also to hide the word in our hearts?) Meaning that your system of theology is developed from the whole counsel of the Word and then proof-texting is added on to further validate claims and show a quick proof of the doctrine? In this way, doctrine developed only from a proof-text and then validated with it would be circular, and something to be avoided. So my next question is, and it is really just a question of where to point me for further investigation, how many proof-texts need to be strung together for a doctrine to be considered to be based on the whole counsel of the Word? Or maybe I have missed something.
