FEMALE SEX WORKERS: CRISIS RESPONSE TEAM

Express News Service:

T'Puram, August 24: The harassment and violence towards sexual minorities like female sex workers and men having sex with men are coming down. Thanks to the initiative of Crisis Response Team, which has been set up with the support of Surakhsa and Janamaitri Police.

The Walayar Valley Lions Suraksha Project that works among the female sex workers in Palakkad has set a model for this initiative in the state by ensuring the cooperation of the community police Janamitri in establishing a Crisis Response Team. A crisis card has been circulated among the female sex workers in which a helpline number has been provided. This is enabling the sex workers to directly call the police or the crisis response team in case of a crisis.

The initiative has been mooted by Kerala State AIDS Control Society as per the operational guidelines issued by National AIDS Control Organisation in a bid to act in time to all the issues of harassment and violence reported against the female sex workers and other high risk groups in the context of HIV.

As a pilot project, the Palakkad district was chosen for this initiative since being a border district, female sex workers are accustomed to cross border sexual encounters as they are highly mobile. As per a study they are often faced with the problems of violence and atrocities from their clients, truckers and middlemen.

After implementing this scheme, for the past six months not even a single case has been registered in the Palakkad district. At the same time the Crisis Response Team has helped several sex workers from the viciousness of their clients, local goons and middlemen. A study conducted by the KSACS here has found that the crisis card provided to the sex workers are helping them in the emergency situations.

It found that the involvement of the Janamaitri Police in Crisis Response Team has raised an incredible trust among the female sex workers. It has certainly improved their self-esteem and is providing support in the behavior change process of the female sex workers.

Through this initiative it is expected that genuine crisis response will facilitate the establishment of good therapeutic rapport between field workers and members of high risk groups, helping communication on safe sex practices. As part of extending this to other districts, all the targeted intervention projects have been asked to initiate crisis response system and a response team to prevent violence and harassment like verbal abuse, arrest on false charges, physical abuse, sexual assault, etc.
