Suikodenfans are a real patient bunch. Decades of silence around the well-beloved RPG was broken last year when remasters of Suikoden 1 and 2 were announced at Tokyo Games Show, due to release sometime this year. Well, they were supposed to. It's time to put that patience to use once more, because the wait is going to be a little longer than originally planned.

Konami has announced it needs a little more time to polish things up, with no updated release date in sight. "Regarding the planned release of Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars, we have reached the conclusion that despite the very best efforts of our dedicated development staff to release the Remasters in 2023, additional time is needed to ensure the quality performance and gameplay experience our users deserve," a tweet from the Suikoden account read.

The upcoming remaster of the first two Suikoden games, titled Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars, has been delayed to an unknown date. Konami says the Suikoden team will be working on getting the remaster ready for release "as soon as possible."

The delay was announced on Twitter in what is now an all-too-familiar format for game delays. "Despite the very best efforts of our dedicated development staff to release the remasters in 2023, additional time is needed to ensure the quality performance and gameplay experience our users deserve," the announcement from Konami reads.

The Suikoden 1 and 2 remasters will be released on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, and will also be playable on current-gen consoles PS5 and Xbox Series XS. Short of being a full remake, the remasters will include improvements to graphics including lighting and shadows, redesigned cutscenes, new HD character portraits by the original artist, improvements to the game's sound, and various new quality-of-life features.

Suikoden is a classic JRPG that was first released in 1995 for the PlayStation, with a direct sequel Suikoden 2 arriving in 1998. The upcoming remake is the first time the games will be released for consoles.

Konami renewed its Suikoden trademark at the start of September last year, which was followed by the announcement of the remasters at the Tokyo Game Show 2022. They will be released across PS4, Xbox One, PC (Steam) and Switch.

Further, sound effects have also been updated to improve the quality of battle effects and add environmental sounds when in the field. And as with Square Enix's Final Fantasy pixel remasters, expect double-speed battles too.

For the unfamiliar, the Suikoden games were critically-acclaimed Japanese RPGs first released on the original PlayStation. Creator Yoshitaka Murayama intended to rival the likes of Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy, and the cult series has become fondly remembered.

Konami has announced Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars at Tokyo Game Show 2022. As a bundle of HD remasters of Suikoden 1 and 2, it will release in 2023 for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam. Check out the trailer below to see them in action.

Along with HD background illustrations, the pixel art animation has received updated updates. New environmental sounds, HD battle SFX, Auto-Save, a Conversation Log and Battle Fast Forward have also been added. Stay tuned for more details and gameplay in the coming months.

After a decade without anything from the beloved series, Konami has announced a remaster of the first Suikoden games is releasing in 2023, called Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars.

When it comes to classic turn-based RPG series that haven't seen a new entry in a long time, there are almost too many to pick from. Wild Arms, Grandia, Skies of Arcadia - the list could go on. One of the most beloved series out there that fans have been wanting to see for a long time is Suikoden, which consists of two mainline titles and hasn't seen much mention from Konami since 2012.

Thankfully, that's about to change. Earlier today during a Tokyo Game Show presentation, Suikoden was confirmed to be making a comeback through a remastered collection containing the first two games, Suikoden and Suikoden 2. The collection is called Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars and is planned for a release in 2023 on Steam, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch.

Some of the key features included in the HD remaster have been listed on the game's official Steam page, which went live earlier today. As can be seen in the trailer, effects have been updated across the board, while new environmental sound effects have also been added and battle sound effects have been updated to play in HD. Character portriats have also been redrawn in HD by Junko Kawano, who originally designed them for the first game.

Aside from the graphical and audio upgrades, an auto-save function has been added to both games and, as has become standard for RPG remasters, the ability to fast-forward during battle has also been introduced. Finally, a conversation log will also be added to the collection, letting players look back on what's been said within the play session.

This remastered collection isn't the only Suikoden thing for fans of the series to look forward to, either. As Kickstarted back in 2020, some of the creators of Suikoden are working on a spiritual successor, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, which is also aiming for a release in 2023.

The first Suikoden game in the series was released by Konami in 1995 in Japan and was written, directed, and created by Yoshitaka Murayama. In the following years, Suikoden II was released in 1998, rejoicing fans all across Japan. So far there have been 5 Suikoden games in the main series along with 6 spin-offs and 1 compilation.

Following his departure, Noritada Matsukawa took over as Senior Director of Suikoden III. Matsukawa also directed Suikoden IV, but the game was produced by Junko Kawano, who was the chief designer in Suikoden I. Suikoden V was directed by Takahiro Sakiyama, a newcomer to RPGs.

Apart from the characters encountered across the game, there are a total of 108 protagonists that are unlockable as the game progresses. Though it is not mandatory to collect all the characters to complete the game, unlocking all 108 protagonists reveals "The True Ending".

Additionally, some parts were reworked for the remaster such as the environment, foliage, trees, waterfalls, characters, attack animations, magic particles and artworks. Furthermore, Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster skips the old, dark vibes and introduces an adventurous world with modern graphics.
