Cha Dae-woong (Lee Seung-Gi) is a normal college student, with ambitions of becoming an action star. One day, he accidentally releases a gumiho (Shin Min-ah), a legendary fox with nine tails who was sealed inside a painting by Samshin Grandmother (三神). Fleeing the scene, Dae-woong suffers a life-threatening fall and is only saved by the gumiho giving him her "fox bead" (여우 구슬). When Dae-woong awakes and meets a mysterious and very beautiful girl, he initially treats her as eccentric or mentally ill, before she discloses that she is actually a gumiho in human form. According to myth, gumihos eat men's livers, so Dae-woong is scared out of his wits, and the gumiho takes advantage of his fear by sticking by his side. He names her "Mi-ho," and keeps her happy by buying her beef and hiding her true identity. Mi-ho wants nothing more than to become human, so they strike a deal: she'll lend him her mystical fox bead so that with his increased speed and strength, he'll be able to do difficult stunts, and in exchange he'll help her become human. As time passes, they get to know each other better and Dae-woong is charmed by how Mi-ho looks at the world with childlike wonder.

Park Dong-joo (No Min-woo), a half-human, half-supernatural being, whose cover identity is a working veterinarian. Dong-joo tells Mi-ho that she'll be able to turn human if she follows these instructions: She must drink Dong-joo's blood then place her fox bead inside a human's body for 100 days. Once she does this, her supernatural self will start to die, gradually. Her gumiho energy will slowly empty away while her bead will live in the human for 100 days and take in his energy. And when she reclaims her bead, she will become human. Mi-ho happily complies, and Dae-woong accepts her bead.

However, Dong-joo deliberately withheld the information that this process will result in the human's death. Mi-ho and Dae-woong thus fall in love without knowing the consequences of fulfilling her goal: in 100 days, Dae-woong will die if Mi-ho becomes fully human, but Mi-ho will die if the bead isn't returned.[4][5]

My Girlfriend Is a Nine-Tailed Fox achieved both nationwide and international success topping ratings in South Korea during its 2-month run. It is one of the most awarded and nominated South Korean series of all time receiving high honors including Best Foreign Soap Opera at the USTv Students' Choice Awards in the Philippines and earning both Lee Seung-gi and Shin Min-ah excellence awards at the SBS Drama Awards.

The drama has also accumulated over 180,000,000 views on Chinese streaming platform Youku and an average of 11,000,000 views per episode (as of April 2016) making it one of the most watched South Korean dramas online in the country.[8]

After accidentally swallowing his fox bead, a college student comes face to face with a 999-year-old gumiho. The gumiho is determined to become human, and the two agree on a contract cohabitation that will guarantee the safety of the fox bead, and the college student's life.

In the final week of our drama, we follow our hero as he attempts to complete his journey from nine-tailed fox to full-fledged oppa. Though he has a faithful young woman at his side to help him reach his goal, the two face many obstacles along the way, and a final test of that will either make or break their love.

But getting back to our lead couple, the road to humanity is not as easy as it sounds. After all, learning to be human is about more than the good manners and good attitude that Dam tries to teach her gumiho. She might fail sometimes (her cursing out the school ulzzangs was hysterical!), but her heart is in the right place. But is that enough?

I think part of it was how she was dressed. Some kind of suit with shoulder pads? Much more suitable for a 40 yr old professor than a freshman. In present day scenes, she's dressed age appropriately and I don't think any one mistakens her for a professor any more.

Regarding Jang Ki-yong, I noticed he was getting a bit thin too, but maybe it's because as a gumiho he getting close to his EOL? Or maybe he was just exhausted if his schedule was similar to Hyeri's during filming, getting only 4 hrs of sleep for 6 months straight.

The world building didn't make any sense, he was threatned to turn into a demon if he didn't become human, but he just disapeared and came back like nothing... The Woo-Yeon was pretty disapointing. He hide the truth and lied to Dam until the end... Dam always forgave him like what he did wasn't important.

The threat of him turning into a demon didn't feel like a threat at all. Woo-yeo just kept hiding things and stalling and procrastinating. No sense of doom or urgency. Yes I had been mentally screaming "are you seriously okay with turning into a demon and killing a bunch of humans like that other demon??"

Cute cute cute????
I loved this drama! I will binge it again once I come back from vacation.
Honestly, yes, you could think he was too old for her, or boring... you could think it was convenient... you could criticize its flaws, because show was not perfect, but it was very well done and had a happy end. What else can you wish for a k-drama? They didn't ruin the end, like in so many other dramas, they didn't destroy our main lead's personalities... they didn't give us only 5 minutes of suddenly happy together at the very end of the episode 16... ?
So, I am proud.
Good for you, writer-nim. Cha ra so!

Not even Mine was as dramatic as the first half of episode 16 (of MRIAG), and Mine was a melodrama!!
Thanks god Hye Sun didn't use her wish on them and their drama. Thanks god Hye Sun and Jae Jin had a happy ending.

I was really offended that Woo-yeo asked Hye-sun to use her one wish to make Dam feel less sad. Hye-sun earned that wish through continuous string of heartbreaks. She suffered for it. Woo-yeo had a broken heart once (and that romance ended badly because of him) and then hid away and wasted his time.

I did like that Jang Ki Yong's brief time on screen as a fully-human Woo Yeon was notably different from the gumiho version. He was definitely the same character, but looser physically, more emotive. A small distinction but honestly not an effort I was expecting in the last 10 minutes of the series, and I appreciated it!

I don't care about the supposed flaws others like to nitpick on and on about. Dunno why anyone would look for sense in a romcom with a premise as silly as this one. I thoroughly enjoyed the drama and will be rewatching it again and again. Thanks for the recaps!

One quibble I have with the weecap-- I don't think Woo yeo's return is random. It's triggered by Dam's refusal to have her memories wiped, thereby fulfilling the last of the Mountain God's requirements. Dam again for the win! I'm still confused by a few things though -- like why he was disappearing in the first place and how his marble cracked.

Despite those holes in my understanding, I still thoroughly enjoyed this show. So many scenes that had me smiling ear to ear -- the kiss scene from the 2nd leads (and how they went back for seconds!), Dam using the word "Oppa", Dan being introduced to his "brother-in-law". And other scenes that had me shedding tears -- Woo yeo thanking Hye sun for caring about him, Dam crying in Hye sun arms after he disappears, Dam teary eyed once Woo yeo returns.

As a kdrama newbie, I don't have enough content under my belt to compare to many other series, but I can see myself returning to this show over and over again to watch Lee Dam unplug toilets, stand up to bullies and show her 999 yr old gumiho how to be human. Love her and loved this show. So sad it's over!

I got really annoyed with Woo-yeo, but I'm really going to miss the humor (it snapped and crackled!) and I'm going to miss Hye-sun (so she came back into Woo-yeo's life on purpose because she knew it was almost the deadline), Dam (I hope Woo-yeo will one day be deserving of your love!), Sookyung, and Jae-jin. And even Lee Dan and Seon-woo's sister. Seon-woo got pretty boring in the end, but I wish him the best.

It was fun to see Woo Yeo describe the taste/texture of food after the restaurant closed during their turn. He almost seemed Lee Dam's soulmate. Their Hi5 after reminiscing about the food was cute. As you mentioned, the drama should have focused more on the human lessons to the gumiho.

This show wasted Jang Ki-yong and Lee Hye-ri's real-life chemistry. As always, Soo-kyung is the brain of our trio schooling Dam in not calling her boyfriend "어르신 eoreusin," which wasn't even a pet name in the first place, and speaking in jondaemal. If only Woo-yeo had shape-shifted before teaching at her university, then at least Dam wouldn't be a student dating her 30-year-old professor.

Soo-kyung's secret crush being Jae-jin was a plot twist, but why did she confess on Everyday Time? Did she want him to know? I really loved Dam, Jae-jin, and Soo-kyung's friendship in the drama, so sigh of relief the truth didn't make them awkward.

Woo-yeo and Hye-sun's bickering was my favorite, but I cried with her when he thanked her for worrying about him. That was more moving than any confession. Like Dam said, they may say mean things to each other, but they really care about each other.

I squealed at Oh Jung-se's cameo. I was wondering why we never met Jae-kang hyung when we met Seon-woo's entire family including Subway owner uncle. Lastly, I loved siblings Seon-woo and Seo-woo's fighting like cats and dogs. Seo-woo's character was hilarious, and I knew Show was setting up enemies to lovers between her and Dan.

Ah, that's why when Jae-jin read the post aloud, he read, "But in fact, I still like him," which Soo-kyung doesn't. Also, when Jae-jin said Seok, Seon-woo, and he were the only guys to play truth or dare, Soo-kyung nervously shifted glances when he counted himself.

Hye-sun never used her blue fox bead wish. But if you look at the last scene with her and Jae-jin, she brings out the fox bead and looks at it with a mischievous smile. I think it's implied that she was gonna use it to fulfill Jae-jin's wish that they never have to be apart, but what exactly she's gonna wish for is never explained.
