The Godrej India Culture Lab invites you to go on a journey through the history of caste resistance in Maharashtra, with power-packed performances ranging from rock to jalsa.

We invite you to enter a world where performance leaves the realm of entertainment and enters the world of social mobilization and identity politics. We are proud to present Performing Resistance: Tracing modern Maharashtra caste history through music - an evening of discussion and performance that explores the intersection between caste, history and musical traditions.

On July 14, the evening will begin with a discussion featuring Ganesh Chandanshive, Tamasha scholar and shahir, Avatthi Ramaiah, Professor at Tata Institute of Social Sciences, and Shilpa Kamble, activist and author of Nilya Dolyanchi Mulagi. This discussion will be moderated by Sunil Shanbag, theatre director and filmmaker. We will also screen a preview of an enlightening documentary Shahiri by Aashit Sable

We will then witness a series of powerful musical performances by shahirs in the city, who will navigate the evolution of Dalit resistance in many styles such as powada, qawwali and even rock! The line-up for the evening includes Kabeer Shakya of Dhamma Wings, India’s first Dalit rock band, mother-son duo Nishant Shaikh and Keshar Jainoo Shaikh, and Yalgaar Sanskrutik Manch.

This event is FREE and OPEN to all, so bring all your friends along :-)

See you on Friday, July 14 at 5pm!
