About the Talk
Indian historiography is curiously dualistic in character, dealing with political relations one dyad at a time. Thus the relationship of upper and lower castes is treated separately from that of Hindus and Muslims, or Aryan and Dravidian movements. This lecture will situate Ambedkar’s thought within a larger context and conversation about the role of “interest” in Indian politics. Its aim is to show how interest, generally taken as the most basic category of politics, was in fact put into question in interesting ways during the 1930’s and ‘40s.
