Iflike me, you've been following Landfall Games CEO Wilhelm Nylund on Twitter, you've been subjected to perhaps hundreds of amusing gifs from Totally Accurate Battle Simulator. But when is it coming out, you may have cried, desperate to make your own gifs of wacky (yet totally accurate) physics-based battles.

While the game isn't complete, there are currently 50 levels of a campaign mode available, which takes you from stone age battles (guys with clubs, axe-wielding chieftains, woolly mammoths) to farmland clashes (farmers with pitchforks, hobbits, and potion-hurling alchemists) to medieval times (knights, squires, kings, and catapults) to Greek mythology (Minotaurs, hoplites, and a lightning-bolt hurling Zeus) to the Vikings (berserkers, longboats, and winged Valkyries).

You might not guess from the silliness on display, but there is some actual strategy in the campaign, as you're always an era behind the AI-controlled enemy army. So when they start breaking out the archers and ballistas and you're still running around with pitchforks and wheelbarrows, you're going to have to get creative to win. Some levels are pretty tricky to beat, but this is a game where failure is as much fun as success.

You can also mess around in sandbox mode and simulate battles between any armies and units you want. Send mammoths to fight minotaurs or put cavemen up against catapults. Want to make a single Arthurian king fight a hundred unarmed but very persistent hobbits? You can do that. I did that.

Once a battle has begun you can fly around the map watching from any angle you choose, and there's slow-motion and super-slow-mo so you can simulate a dramatic, 300-style battle as I did with the king below.

Totally Accurate Battle Simulator (TABS) is a physics-based strategy video game developed and published by Landfall Games. An alpha version of the game was initially released in 2016 to a small audience. The game was released for macOS and Windows in April 2021, for Xbox One in October 2021, for Nintendo Switch in November 2022, and for PlayStation 4 in September 2023. It has since received numerous free title updates that have added new content, such as maps and units, in addition to fixing bugs and improving the performance. Versions for Android and iOS are currently in development.

The game has over 130 units across fourteen factions, which are mostly themed around different cultures and eras of human history.[4] Some of these units are hidden on various maps and must be found by the player before they are unlocked. Many units have special abilities that are unique to them or they share with a few others, such as flight, projectile deflection, and teleportation. The game also features representations of the storytelling tropes of good and evil, with the good and evil sides having angelic and demonic themes respectively. The maps in the game are centered around the same themes as the factions and differ in size and geography. The game features twenty maps in total, with twenty-two additional "Simulation" maps.

Players can create their own battle scenarios, choosing from any of the available units, maps, and winning conditions. A December 2020 update added the Unit Creator, where players can create their own units, giving them abilities, clothing, and weapons from the already existing TABS units, as well as the spin-offs Totally Accurate Battlegrounds and Totally Accurate Battle Zombielator. Both custom battles and units can be shared with other players via the in-game workshop. The full release of the game in April 2021 added both online and local multiplayer modes, and achievements.[5] A new update on November 3, 2021, added a map creator, allowing players to create their own battlefields.

The game was made during a week-long game jam in a Swedish castle.[6][2] The game was developed using the Unity game engine.[7] Landfall Games released the download for people who signed up to their website in July 2016.[3][8] The game was released in open alpha in November 2016, while the closed alpha was released in December 2016. The full version of the game was released in early access on Steam on 1 April 2019 for Windows and macOS.[9]

On 9 June 2019 at the E3 convention, Xbox announced via their Indie Developers program that TABS would be coming to Xbox One in the Xbox Game Pass later that year.[10] It was released via Xbox Game Preview on December 20, 2019.[11] On 1 April 2020, free downloadable content (DLC) for the game, entitled the Bug DLC, was released; for a limited time, players could buy the DLC, with half the money raised being donated to Doctors Without Borders.[12]

The game exited early access for Windows and Mac on April 1, 2021.[5] The Xbox One version was released on 5 October 2021, followed by a Nintendo Switch port of the game on 3 November 2022, with a version for PlayStation 4 released on 5 September 2023.[13][14][15] A port for iOS and Android is currently being developed by Landfall Games in collaboration with XD.[16]

The game received generally positive reviews. It has been referred to as a "vibrant and goofy take on chaotic combat",[17] and its "silly graphics and kind of wonky body physics" were told to be part of the "charming appeal of an otherwise realistic simulator".[18] The game has also been described as "brilliant in its simplicity" and "outstanding".[3]

Totally Accurate Battle Simulator (TABS)Totally Accurate Battle Simulator is the wacky fun physics style battle simulation game in which you have complete control and you must plan your strategy in the battle to win the fight. This game uses a state of the art physics engine which adds an unparalleled level of realism and fun to the gameplay. You can place a variety of different types of battle units in endless different formations on the battlefield to create your own battles and have endless amounts of fun. Examples of units include caveman, woolly mammoths, Viking longboats, Roman legionnaires, and longbow archers. Hundreds of units throughout time are represented.

Experience accurate warfare through the ages with different time periods including the Stone Age, Medieval period, Vikings, Renaissance, and even ancient history such as Rome and Greece. The different units and timezones currently available give great variety.

Aside from the cool art physics based simulation, Totally Accurate Battle Simulator also has some brilliant maps and game modes. There are currently 14 different maps available - each of which represents a different historical area of part of our world.

Players can also wage war in different game modes including a sandbox mode, and a singleplayer campaign. Furthermore, tabs uses state of the art battle and campaign creators - this allows players to develop their own maps and military reenactments.

When playing this physics based tactics game, which faction will you try? Each faction has a selection of different units. The medieval faction, for example, has bards, squires, archers, catapults, priests, and knights. Alternatively, the Stoner Age has stone-throwers, mammoths, and a bone mage!

Totally Accurate Battle Simulator is a battle simulation game paired up with the humorous rag doll physics that will send by the player's and the opponent's units shooting across the map once they have been hit. It heavily parodies the battle simulator genre to make a casual yet funny experience for players to enjoy.

This experience is only made funnier through the units available to the player to use. From a variety of different factions players can focus on testing an army of simple farmers against Ice Giants to creating an unstoppable force of mammoths. It is completely down to the player what army they create, but these are by far the best units to use.

Enlisted in the Medieval Faction, Archers are a ranged unit that may seem weak due to their small amount of health but if placed down in large numbers can cause mayhem for the opponent from a distance. Especially if given the right defense then they can down many units in one to three shots.

Due to their ranged attacks with the bow, it is near impossible to defeat an archer unless the opponent also has ranged units or a melee unit that can tank the hits before finally approaching their target.

Ranged units can also be incredibly useful when attempting to control the battlefield and one way this can be done easily while also committing to a decent amount of damage is by using a Wizard. With its staff a wizard targets one enemy shooting lightning at them which knocks the unit back, they will then begin to glow blue, after a while they will then electrocute the surrounding units.

Unfortunately, unlike other units players must first unlock the Wizard before they are able to purchase them to use in battles. It can be unlocked by going to the Legacy Map and searching the dirt path left of the church. A player will find a wizard hat and pipe which is they continue to look at will glow and then unlock the wizard.
