Cheat codes may not be as prominent in video games as they once were, but there was a time when entire magazines, TV shows, and websites were dedicated to sharing these commands, codes, and tactics that would change the way you played your favorite games.

By entering CIRCLE, CIRCLE, CIRCLE, CIRCLE, CIRCLE, CIRCLE, R1, L2, L1, TRIANGLE, CIRCLE, TRIANGLE (in the PS2 version of the game), GTA 3 players could spawn an invincible Rhino tank that could destroy any other vehicle with one cannon shot. It was the cheat you relied on when you were about to quit playing or were feeling especially frustrated/destructive. Sure, it sometimes broke the game and slowed the framerate to a crawl, but those drawbacks honestly just highlight how insane and delightful this cheat was.

Age of Empires 2 features so many memorable cheats that you could honestly argue they helped define the legacy of this classic RTS. However, there is one cheat code that stands above the rest.

Some of my favorite cheat codes ever are the ones you could use against unsuspecting friends to blow their minds and possibly ruin their day. So far as that goes, there are few cheat codes more memorable than unlocking Akuma in the arcade version of Super Street Fighter II: Turbo.

As the first first-person shooter many of us played when we were young, Doom could be incredibly intimidating in terms of its mechanics, concept, difficulty, and even tone. However, when someone put in this code and made you invincible, it really made it easier to appreciate just what a joy this classic was and how that whole FPS thing was probably going to stick around for a while.

The World Video Game Hall of Fame announced this year's finalists that are set to join the ranks of the most legendary titles of all time. Among these new hall inductees is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (and it's about time).

The World Video Game Hall of Fame is a program that looks to shine an extra light on video games that have popularity that's proven to stand the test of time. This year's titles are all-around heavy hitters and include The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Dance Dance Revolution, Sid Meier's Civilization, and arcade classic Ms. Pac Man.

The GameCube is one of Nintendo's most underrated systems. When discussing Nintendo, the GameCube is often overlooked, except when Super Smash Bros. Melee is brought up. This system, now celebrating its 20th anniversary, has left a lasting impact on how some of us view gaming. With the introduction of amazing games such as Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker and Animal Crossing, the GameCube is one system that a lot of us hold close to our hearts.

In honor of this great system, we decided to go through some of the best games offered on the platform. In our opinion, it has one of the best game libraries of any console -- ever. We've included classics as well as hidden gems that maybe you've forgotten about.

The last of the three Grand Theft Auto games to come on the PS2 and Xbox era of consoles is considered by many to be the absolute best of the trilogy. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, which is in no subtle way meant to represent Los Angeles, was designed to be the best playground possible for the street gang adventures of protagonist CJ as he is swept into a plot that will bring him across multiple regions within San Andreas, including Los Santos, San Fierro, and Las Venturas. This game is where RockStar really started to draw direct parallels between the events and characters in game and real-world events.

As serious and enthralling as the main plot of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas - Definitive Edition is, this new and improved version doesn't forget what kept so many people coming back to it for hours after the credits rolled. That's right, cheats are back and can change the game in all sorts of ways. Whether you want to make the game a bit easier, or just cause as much damage and chaos as possible, there's a cheat for it. If you want to relive the old days of messing around in this essential open-world title, here are all the cheats in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas - Definitive Edition.

Cheat codes can change the game's fundamental rules, give the player an insurmountable advantage, or humorously change the game in some way. Cheat codes have fallen out of fashion in many modern games, but many players remember them fondly. In particular, many cheat codes are beloved for their standout entertainment factor.

The Sims tasks the player with managing an ordinary family in a simulated world. Part of the game's challenge comes from managing the family's finances, particularly regarding building and upgrading their home. Money is a precious resource in The Sims. Unless that is, the player opens the console with CTRL+shift+c and types 'rosebud' into it.

This Citizen Kane reference rewards the player with 1000 simoleons in The Sims. This is a minor effect, but there is no limit to how often the player can do it. By dedicating a few moments to this cheat code, a player can amass effectively unlimited wealth and create the extravagant home of their dreams for their Sims.

The Best Gaming Sci-Fi UniversesStar Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast makes the same game balance concession most Star Wars video games do. The lightsaber is a conventional video game melee weapon rather than the impossibly lethal blade of the movies. Even lowly enemies take several hits with a laser sword before they die, usually with no visible damage.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 allows the player to perform impressive skateboarding stunts and tricks under the limitations of normal gravity. This only becomes exaggerated with the ability to loosen these restrictions. A Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 player can pause the game and, while holding L1, press X, Square, Left, Up, Down, Up, Square, and Triangle.

This reduces Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2's gravity significantly, so the physics resemble skateboarding on the moon. This is more than just a fun gameplay tweak. The much higher jumps allow the player to pull off stunts that would be harder or impossible under the game's standard rules.

Bullet time is one of Max Payne's central mechanics. It emulates movies like The Matrix to add a cinematic edge to its frantic combats. Time slows, giving the player time to place their shots and avoid enemy fire against overwhelming odds. This only becomes more fun when the player has unlimited bullet time.

To get endless bullet time in Max Payne, the player has to pause and press L1, L2, R1, R2, Triangle, X, X, and Triangle. This destroys Max Payne's gameplay balance and makes any fight easily winnable. At the same time, it emphasizes the game's power fantasy and adds a cinematic edge to any encounter.

Mistakes That Still Haunt Street FighterSuper Street Fighter II Turbo introduces Akuma as a hidden boss character with strict requirements to fight against. However, there is an even more obscure way to play as him. The player has to highlight Ryu in Super Street Fighter II Turbo's character select screen for three seconds. Then they do the same for T. Hawk, Guile. Cammy, and Ryu again. Hitting the start button and all three punch buttons then select Akuma.

The playable Akuma in Super Street Fighter II Turbo is much weaker than the boss version of him players can fight. Nonetheless, he's an entire playable character hidden behind an obscure cheat code. He adds an immense amount of variety to the game while being fun to play in his own right.

GoldenEye 007 is full of cheats, many of which can either be unlocked legitimately or through codes. 'DK Mode' doesn't affect gameplay as much as some other cheats. However, it has become beloved for its absurdity, randomness, and ability to destroy any seriousness the game has whatsoever.

SimCity 2000 has several different cheats that cause a natural disaster. Typing 'Noah' or 'gomorrah' outright starts a crisis, being a flood and a nuclear disaster respectively. Typing 'cass' adds an element of risk and reward to this. The player gets free money every time they do but risks a disaster each time.

SimCity 2000 is primarily a game about construction and building. However, many players enjoy the feeling of creating a perfect city and seeing how well it stands up to a disaster. Others enjoy being able to set off a crisis and see how well they manage it. Natural disasters in SimCity 2000 open up many new ways to play, and cheats give players a certain amount of control.

Jetpacks add even more straightforward fun to traveling in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. They are simply cool, a more epic way of moving around the map than driving or even piloting a vehicle. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas backpacks can be hard to control and lethal, but this adds to their entertainment value for many players.

Doom is one of the earliest games with famous cheat codes, some of which are better known than 'God Mode.' This makes a Doom player completely invincible to conventional damage and almost impossible to kill. The player can then play as normal aside from being nearly indestructible.

Part of Doom's charm comes from its high difficulty. Nonetheless, many players enjoy the sheer power fantasy of becoming invincible and blasting their way through the game. It's not a fair way to play Doom, but it's very welcome for players who don't care about that aspect of the game.

The Konami Code is far and away the most iconic video game cheat code ever made. It's a debug tool accidentally left in the video game Gladius that gives the player every power-up at once. Konami has reused it in other iconic video games like Contra, starting a cascade of many developers referencing it.

The Konami Code works in games like BioShock Infinite, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, and Tetris Effect, alongside many other titles. It does something different in almost every game. It's surprising how many titles give a secret or bonus when the player enters Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A.
