Hi Jodi, everyone:
At long last, I remembered to type up my notes from the bagel session, and they are attached.
On the topic of the interdepartmental collaborative courses, such as a class between ITP and GMTWP, I also reached out to DanO (our department chair) about this. Here is what he wrote back:
We do offer classes that save seats for other departments for instance
this semester with Educational Tech next semester with Government.
The Musical Theater Writing Department is my favorite and I would die
to do a class with them. This is not always easy because many of the
other graduate departments are have a curriculum that is does not have
any room for outside classes and the undergrad collaborations are
problematic. Of course there is also the problem that saving seats
for outside students exacerbates the issue that you were talking about
earlier of ITP students unhappy about not getting into classes.
I understand his reasoning but it also sounds to me like none of these are reasons not to try to make this happen. It may be helpful if one of you guys from GMTWP talked to your chair or somebody in charge of academics about the possibility of loosening up your curriculum enough to allow for courses like that to happen.
Cheers,
