One of these new weapons has quickly become a fan favourite due to its unique design and extremely powerful weapon art. This blade is named the Sword of Night and Flame , and can be found relatively early in your journey across the Lands Between.
Updated November 29, 2023, by Sean Murray: Elden Ring's Sword of Night and Flame is still a powerful weapon, so Tarnished would be well-served by this guide to its location. That's why we've refreshed it with improved formatting and more links to other helpful Elden Ring topics.
Among the many things to do in the Liurnia of the Lakes is a legacy dungeon, the Caria Manor. It's a mid-game area with some dangerous enemies to take on. To find the Caria Manor, you'll want to stick to the left-hand cliff in Liurnia of the Lakes, moving northward until you reach the Road to the Manor Site of Grace. Here you'll find a giant blacksmith named Iji, who'll fill you in on some lore that led to the Manor's downfall before warning against entering.
From here, head along the stone walkway, being careful of the ghostly knights that appear both in front of and behind you. Turn left at the first tower, then turn right at the next. Soon, you'll come across an exposed section of the walkwayon your left, with the roof of a building visible.
Jump down onto this roof and then down onto the next. This rooftop has a square hole with a ladder leading down. Head down the ladder into the dimly lit room to find a chest. Inside will be the Sword of Night and Flame.
After finding the sword, you can loop back around and carry on exploring the manor. Make sure you do, as completing this area allows you to begin a questline for Ranni the Witch. For tips, check out our guide on how to complete Ranni the Witch's questline.
The Sword of Night and Flame requires 12 Strength, 12 Dexterity, 24 Intelligence, and 24 Faith. It has weapon scaling of D in both Intelligence and Faith; the weapon will become stronger with the more points you put into each stat.
The Sword of Night and Flame is an extremely powerful Straight Sword in Elden Ring with a unique Skill, Night-And-Flame-Stance, which can devastate both single targets and groups of enemies. This is due to it having 2 ways to manifest the skill when you follow up with either a normal attack for the Night Comet Sorcery, or a heavy attack to cleave through the area in front of you with a blazing inferno.
Updated by Chad Thesen on March 20, 2024: This article has been updated for the purpose of adding additional information. This includes a new Stinger Paragraph, new key bits of information, new images, an enhanced introduction, renaming certain parts, restructuring, increasing word count, and reenvisioning certain areas to be more beneficial to readers.
The Sword of Night and Flame is found in Caria Manor in a chest in a room on the Eastern side that is only accessible by jumping down from above. You can get to it easily from the ManorLower Level Site Of Grace by following the ramparts and keeping left until you see some lower buildings you can jump down to and then look for a hole in the roof with a ladder that leads down to it.
The Sword of Night and Flame cannot be upgraded with regular Smithing Stones. It can only be upgraded with Somber Smithing Stones. When you first obtain this weapon, its Stat Scalings will be Strength E, Dexterity E, Intelligence D, and Faith D. At maximum +10 upgrade, these will be upgraded to Strength D, Dexterity D, Intelligence B, and Faith B.
To build effectively for this weapon, you have to understand exactly how the unique skill works. After you activate the skill with L2, which costs 0FP, you enter a stance that then gives you two options: You can either make an R1 Light Attack, which will cast a Magic damage Night Comet for 26FP that scales with Intelligence. Alternatively, you can make an R2 heavy Attack, which will unleash a shorter-range, but the much wider area, Fire damage attack for 32FP that scales with Faith.
With this weapon's lower Strength and Dexterity requirements, this weapon definitely fits casters better, so to complement the sword, this build focuses on some Sorceries that already have dual Intelligence and Faith requirements: Magma and Death. These two Sorcery schools have some very cool spells, and even better, many of these spells had FP requirements lessened or their mechanics buffed in recent patches.
For Death, Ancient Death Rancor is a powerful multi-hit Death spell that will deal very high stagger to enemies. When combined with the stagger from your sword's Night Comet, this can stunlock and melt many bosses. Explosive Ghostflame is a later-game area nuke that requires 42 Int and 30 Fai but also causes Knockback and applies Frostbite. This spell can also be particularly devastating in PVP. Most of the other Death spells are not great, so you should avoid them.
If you want to pour on some spell damage against your enemies then wielding the Sword of Night and Flame along with a staff in the other will ramp up your damage output. 1-handing the Sword of Night and Flame will be the most effective way to use it, so on your other hand, you have a few options to boost this build. One of the best is Prince Of Death's Staff. This weapon will boost the power of your Death Sorceries by 10%, and it also scales with both Intelligence and Faith to complement this build. A very similar option if you prefer to focus on the Magma Sorceries is Gelmir Glintstone Staff. This also scales with Int/Fai and boosts Magma spells by 15%.
For your Armor, the Spellblade Set will increase the damage of the Sword's Night Comet attack by 2% for each piece. This will not boost the flame attack or your other non-magic Sorceries, though. Armor that boosts your Mind or reduces FP costs is also a strong option for this build, such as Preceptor's Big Hat. Otherwise, you will generally want to stick to lighter armor to keep a medium equipment load and keep the best dodge roll.
Your Talismans should certainly include Carian Filigreed Crest, which is the perfect partner for this sword, as it reduces the FP cost of Night-And-Flame-Stance by 25%. The Graven-School Talisman and Graven-Mass Talisman are good pairs to increase the damage of your Sorceries. If you are struggling with the stat requirements of this Sword, there are several Talismans you can use to increase Intelligence and Faith, like Stargazer Heirloom and Two Fingers Heirloom, or for the more powerful but risky option, Marika's Scarseal and Soreseal.
As of patch 1.03 (March 17, 2022) this weapon has been significantly nerfed. The damage of its special attacks has been reduced by around half and the FP costs increased. This makes the Sword of Night and Flame a hard-sell, considering the stat requirements.
The Sword of Night and Flame is a one-handed straight sword that deals physical, fire and magic damage. These forms of damage scale off of Strength/Dexterity, Faith and Intelligence, respectively. While a fairly potent weapon in its own right, its unique Night-and-Flame Stance abilities are why this sword is (or rather, was - see note, above) highly sought after.
Its L2 + R2 attack winds up and shoots out a gout of flame. This attack scales off Faith, and while it has an even shorter range, the broad sweep of fire makes it easier to deal with mobs, or strike opponents who are otherwise quick with their lateral movements. The damage diversity is always nice, in any event.
Fight through them or ignore them as you head northeast through the ruins until you find your way seemingly blocked by a wall. Attack the brick-filled archway to dispel it, freeing you to pass through and reach the Road to the Manor Site of Grace. You can also find Smithing Master Iji to the left of the road, and he sells a variety of Somber Smithing Stones (grades 1-4) which may just come in handy soon.
Welcome to our guide for Elden Ring - the critically acclaimed open world game by FromSoftware, Hidetaka Miyazaki & writer George R.R Martin. This guide is a work-in-progress and currently contains the following:
The Faith stat is used to cast Incantations that can heal, damage, and all sorts of other cool effects, we're going through the best Faith builds as well as best runes to try in Elden Ring. We've got a support build, an offensive build, and a flexible hybrid build.
We're going to start out with the paladin, the paladin is a defense orientated build focusing on guard countering attacks and using holy damage solely with the code sword to finish off enemies, the code sword has the unblockable blade skill which makes a sweeping attack that cannot be blocked, and this weapon is also unique because its standard attacks cannot be bounced off shields like normal elements, this build uses the golden vowel to buff your defense and attack power, and you've got plenty of other spell options that you can use like lightning spear or the Blessing of the Erdtree or really anything else because this build is almost solely based on faith you can use really any incantations that fit with that line guard countering to deal damage in that way and just focusing on keeping this like sword and shield kind of style, you could go further into this by using like a great shield to really maximize your defensive potential, and use something like the clean rot spear which also scales with face so that you can always keep your shield up and then poke from behind the shield, but we're using this like guard countering sword and shield style.
