If you are a fan of fantasy novels, especially those set in the rich and diverse world of the Forgotten Realms, you have probably heard of R.A. Salvatore. He is one of the most prolific and popular authors of this genre, with over 70 books to his name. He is best known for his series featuring the dark elf Drizzt Do'Urden, a heroic and noble character who defies the evil stereotypes of his race.

In this article, we will explore some of the highlights of Salvatore's career, his most famous series and characters, and his latest trilogy, The Way of the Drow.

A Brief Biography of R.A. Salvatore

R.A. Salvatore was born in 1959 in Massachusetts, USA. He discovered his passion for fantasy literature at a young age, when he read The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien. He also played Dungeons & Dragons, a role-playing game that inspired him to create his own stories and characters.

He studied computer science at Fitchburg State College, but he soon realized that he wanted to pursue a career as a writer. He submitted a manuscript to TSR, the company that owned Dungeons & Dragons and the Forgotten Realms setting, and was accepted. His first novel, The Crystal Shard, was published in 1988 and introduced Drizzt Do'Urden to the world.

Since then, Salvatore has written dozens of novels set in the Forgotten Realms, as well as other settings such as Star Wars, DemonWars, and Corona. He has won several awards and accolades for his work, such as the New York Times bestseller list, the Origins Award, and the Compton Crook Award. He lives in Massachusetts with his wife and three children.

The Legend of Drizzt Series

The Legend of Drizzt is the overarching series within the Forgotten Realms detailing the exploits of Drizzt Do'Urden and his friends. It consists of 39 primary works and 45 total works, spanning several sub-series and standalone novels.

The series follows Drizzt's journey from his birth in Menzoberranzan, a cruel and decadent city of dark elves who worship the spider goddess Lolth, to his escape to the surface world, where he faces prejudice and hostility from other races. Along the way, he meets allies such as Bruenor Battlehammer, a dwarven king; Catti-brie, a human warrior; Wulfgar, a barbarian; Regis, a halfling thief; and Guenhwyvar, a magical panther.

The series also features other memorable characters such as Jarlaxle Baenre, a charismatic and cunning drow mercenary; Artemis Entreri, a ruthless human assassin; Zaknafein Do'Urden, Drizzt's father and mentor; and Crenshinibon, a sentient crystal shard with evil ambitions.

The series is known for its action-packed scenes, emotional depth, moral dilemmas, and exploration of themes such as identity, friendship, loyalty, racism, redemption, and faith.

The Way of the Drow Trilogy

The Way of the Drow is Salvatore's newest trilogy within The Legend of Drizzt series. It expands the Forgotten Realms through the adventures of Drizzt, Catti-brie, Jarlaxle, Artemis Entreri, and Zaknafeinâand a society of drow unlike one any elf from Menzoberranzan could possibly imagine.

The first book in the trilogy is Starlight Enclave (2021), which follows Drizzt and Catti-brie as they search for their missing friends after a devastating battle with an army of slaadi (chaotic frog-like creatures). They discover a hidden enclave of drow who have renounced Lolth and embraced Eilistraee (the goddess of moonlight) or Vhaeraun (the god of shadow). These drow call themselves "aevendrow" (starlight elves) and have a different culture and philosophy than their kin in Menzoberranzan.

The second book in the trilogy is Glacier's Edge (2022), which follows Jarlaxle as he tries to escape from the ice caverns where he was trapped by
