Theflying season is winding down here in Western Pennsylvania so I have returned to the building board. I have a couple of designs I have been flying for a while but have not written up yet. This is one of them. I have flown this for more than a year but did not write an article on it because I was not able to provide adequate plans. Unlike most of my previous designs you need full sized plans to build this one.

This is a basic intermediate or advanced trainer depending on the wing option. You can start with intermediate wing with dihedral and then move up to advanced by simply making a second wing with no dihedral. It uses a standard FT power pod with tabs removed.

We call this the "Stout Trainer". The name came from a comment by Bob McBride who is doing the drawings with me for this design. When I first sent pictures to him he responded saying, "That looks like a really stout wing on that trainer." I liked the ring of it, "Stout Trainer". We have been calling it that since.

1. Efficient use of materials: The fuselage and tail uses the full width and length of 2 sheets of DTFB joined on 20" sides with very little waste. Each wing uses one full sheet of DTFB on a no waste basis. Wood parts use one 6" X12" sheet of 18" lite ply with no waste. Misc. Parts use another 1/2 sheet of DTFB with very little waste.

1. On the original fuselage design I had placed the tail plane too low. It was in the wing wash. I cut and reshape the original fuselage to test the concept then redesigned to the current arrangement.

7. The original vertical stabilizer warped in use. I added a leading edge dowel extending to the bottom of the fuselage to stiffen it. I also extended the back end down to sandwich between the fuselage sides,

A while back Bob McBride contacted me expressing interest in building my 80" No Waste Flying Wing. He had a couple of questions about missing or unclear dimensions. He sent his questions in the form of a multi color digital drawing. Now I am thinking, I wish I could do that!" We went back and forth a couple of times. He ended up with a nearly complete drawing in very short order and offer that I could use it as my own when it as done. I replied that I would like to offer it to the community but would only do so if his work was properly credited. I told him about my predicament regarding the trainer and suggested that we could partner on it. "Designed by: Dan Harkless Drawn by: Bob McBride". He graciously agreed.

For the last several weeks we have been working on the drawings, learning each other's methods and working out the details. I think we are ending up with a pretty good set of plans. Our results will be attached below. You can be the judge.

I am including a Building Sequence narrative below. It is pretty lengthy so I am including it as an separate file. Moderately experienced builders should be able to follow the plans and building sequence for a successful build.

Update 1-25-16: I have revised the Building Sequence reversing the order of installing parts "G" and "H" based on a suggestion from jalkin to make the installation of "H" easier. Thanks to jalkin for the good suggestion. (This is the second revision. This one is correct.)

There are two wing options that can be built. The version in the pictures is the advanced trainer with a straight wing. An optional intermediate training wing can be built with about 5 degrees of dihedral. This would be a good first aileron trainer.

Overall flight performance is pretty impressive with the suggested motor. It has sharp responses to control inputs. It is capable of either extended slow and easy flight or a full range of aerobatics. It does fairly large to very tight loops, sharp to slow and easy rolls, inverted, hammer head stalls, etc.

I have had flight times of 15 to 20 minutes with two 2700 3S and still had about 30% to 40% battery life left. That was with the throttle set at anywhere from 35% to 100% doing aerobatics mixed with some slow and easy flying around. I have not yet had the patience to do a long duration test but I believe I could get between 30 and 45 minutes going easy with this set-up.

The Advanced Pilot Trainer is nearly 10 years behind its initial estimate. In January 2023, the contractor developed a new schedule to reflect recent delays. However, according to Air Force program officials, this new schedule is also optimistic, relying on favorable outcomes not supported by past performance. In January 2023, the Air Force conducted a schedule risk assessment but did not assess two key risks. One of these risks is overlap between key program phases, which magnifies the cost and schedule impact of potential issues discovered during testing. Cascading delays increase reliance on the T-38 trainer or fighter jets for training, both of which are costly options.

Delays have also affected contractor decisions regarding manufacturing, with implications for the Air Force's quality assurance, which GAO refers to as oversight. Given development delays, the Air Force has not yet ordered aircraft beyond five initial test aircraft. But, the contractor began producing parts in March 2022 and intends to begin assembling aircraft in early 2024. The Air Force has not ordered production aircraft, so its traditional means of overseeing aircraft production is not viable, reducing confidence that this work will meet not-yet-established contract specifications. With limited oversight of production prior to ordering aircraft, the Air Force does not have a plan for determining under what conditions it would accept production work completed prior to contract delivery.

The Air Force's Advanced Pilot Trainer program intends to replace the T-38 trainer jet, which is increasingly expensive to maintain and not reflective of modern fighter jets and other aircraft. The Advanced Pilot Trainer is behind schedule, increasing strain on Air Force resources as it maintains aging aircraft while developing the new aircraft.

A House report included a provision for GAO to assess the Advanced Pilot Trainer program. This report examines (1) any development challenges the program is facing, (2) the program's schedule targets and any risks to those targets, and (3) manufacturing plans for the aircraft.

To conduct this work, GAO assessed the extent to which the Air Force has developed and tested key technologies against program objectives. GAO reviewed the program's schedule and compared it to baseline estimates and GAO's best practices for schedules. Lastly, GAO assessed the program's manufacturing plans against federal regulations and DOD policy. GAO interviewed DOD and Air Force officials and contractor representatives.

GAO is making two recommendations to the Air Force to (1) ensure the program conducts a risk assessment that incorporates risks of overlapping development, testing, and production phases, and (2) make a plan for determining under what conditions it would accept production work completed prior to contract delivery. DOD concurred with our recommendations.

When you get finish your story line on the starter planet you are on, you next go to the fleet, when you there and go up the elevator there should be a few quests to pick up, one for Crew skills and the other one will take you to the advanced class trainer. just bring up the map and go to the quest (combat section of the fleet), just pick careful though theres no going back after you picked your advanced class. (combat section)

Don't miss the advanced trainer when you get to level 10! I walked right past him as I exited the hangar area at the fleet. I then spent the next four hours looking for a trainer or a quest to get the advanced training to start my talent tree.

i got to dromund kass at lvl 9 and got my advance trainer choice right there in the bounty hunter enclave when it was time, he stands in the same room with the trainer, and gives you the same quest to go talk to the two guys who beat you up (they are up the elevator directly above him)

honestly i think the intent was for us to get our advance class on dromund kass and too many people were too stupid to go there that they added the exact same npcs and quest to the fleet as an extra, now people are too stupid to find that one either even though its directlhy in front of you as you come out of the shuttle area

even having them on the fleet at all is catering to stupids, maybe they need to make it a giant pop up on your screen, and im sure some people will still click through it without reading and ask where it is like an idiot (as many people ask questions that were answered clearly in the pop up tips already for other things)

Rally Master Merrk Kelborn is the guy you are looking for. Big Mandalorian in a distinctive armour of gold and various other colours with a bald head. Stands just outside the lift from the hangar on the main level of the fleet station, where you enter the first time you are there.

You can also find him when you enter the main hall of the Mandalorian Enclave on Dromund Kaas, standing in front of a Krayt Dragon skull that is lit up. He is the first Mandalorian not in blue armour you will see as you enter.

Great communicators know how to connect with their audience and how to capture and hold attention. They are skilled at convincing audience members of the need to understand the message, believe what they say, and take appropriate action. To present and facilitate, you must know how to communicate well. In this training, you will refine and perfect your communication skills to become an effective trainer.

The two seating configurations for trainer aircraft are: pilot and instructor side by side, or in tandem, usually with the pilot in front and the instructor behind. The side-by-side seating configuration has the advantage that the pilot and instructor can see each other's actions, allowing the pilot to learn from the instructor and the instructor to correct the student pilot. The tandem configuration has the advantage of being closer to the normal working environment that a fast jet pilot is likely to encounter.
