So I recently built a new PC and it seems that now days there is not a lot of case options that include slots for DVD drives. I use my PC to store my movie, video, music and picture libraries for access around the house through applications such as Plex. In order to add additional DVDs, I had to purchase an external drive. Plus I wanted to be able to burn some videos to DVD for use in the car when on trips. This external drive from Gotega (note that there is a logo on the actual drive but in the amazon listing there isn't) fits my needs and does not take up a lot of space. I have played videos on it and have burned a DVD already and it seems to work as advertised. That being said, you will need to buy or download free software to do much of anything with it as most software does not come with your computer any more. Crazy that I spent more on software than on the drive. The drive seems to be very quiet compared to my internal drives of the past. As of today I have not needed to transport it anywhere but my laptop does not have a DVD drive either so should I need to go on a trip this drive is small and could be easily taken along. Plus there is a groove in the bottom that would allow it to be easily tucked away for transport. All in all this drive is well worth the money.
I bought a new external DVD player but it did not work. The power is on when plugged into the MacBook Pro but it does not show up on Finder. I have the Monterey v12.1 iOS. Does anyone have problems with their DVD player after update to Monterey? How do you fix it?
I'm not sure if what I have to add will be helpful. But, here goes. I have a MacBook Air I bought in 2017. I use an external apple cd/dvd drive connected to one of the USB ports on the MacBook and all was fine until I upgraded the OS to Monterey v12.1 today. While installing Monterey, a pop up advised that the dvd/cd drive I'd always used would not work. I continued regardless (probably an unwise decision, on reflection). So, once installed, I plugged the external cd/dvd drive into the usb and, indeed, with the new Monterey 12.1 OS installed, Finder could not detect the external drive and having done all the checks and balances, still no luck. So, then, I decided to leave the cd/dvd drive connected by USB and just put a dvd into it and see what happened ..... and lo and behold, the dvd instantly opened and began to play the dvd regardless of Monterey OS 12.1 not identifying that the external drive even existed. I do not understand this at all but am glad that the external drive plays dvd's and cd's regardless. Good luck and I hope you find a solution to your current issue.
So I was able to find a solution. The problem seems to be associated with the power needed to run the CD drives. I bought this drive from Amazon that comes with its own separate power cord: ROOFULL External CD/DVD +/-RW Drive USB 3.0 Type-C with 2 USB Ports & SD/TF Reader & Protective Carrying Case, Portable CD DVD Optical Drive Burner for Windows 11/10 Laptop PC, MacBook Pro/ Air, iMac
it works great as long as you hook up the drive via the usb on a separate dongle. I have the drive connected to the dongle and the power adapter and it works immediately once I insert the CD. Apple Music shows up every time.
Mine isn't working either after upgrading to Monterey. I can hear the disk spin up and then it stops after plugging it to my laptop. I've tried launching the DVD player with the disk inserted but that doesn't work. The drive does not show up at all under system profiler.
I have the same question, but I am using a MacBook Pro 2019 running MacOS 12.1. (Monterey). I did everything you said--checked if my mac can burn a dvd, etc. I connected the DVD drive to my computer via a dongle that has an old fashioned usb port and that port plugs into my thunderbolt drive. Still it does not appear on my desktop. I put a blank dvd+r into the drive because I need to copy stuff to it. It still does not show up. Even if I was able to burn something to it, how would I eject it if I cannot see it? This is crazy. I hate having to have a boat load connectors that sometimes do and sometimes don't work. I can't live this way!!!
I have a Mac Mini and a macbook 2018 both on Moneterey 12.2.1. I use a Samsung SE-506 DVD writer. Since Monterey the DVD writer is not able to be identified by either mac devices. It was prior to the upgrade working fine.
I have a new MacBook Air 2020 which came with OS 12.3. Tried to run my Apple USB Superdrive both through a hub and directly into the Mac with a USB-C to USB adapter. The superdrive is not recognized in Finder in either instance and will not accept a disc. Really bummed as I have a huge CD library and want to create more playlists on my Mac. Apple Tech support could not solve the problem.
Me too. I have a MacBook Pro 210, running Monterey 12.4. The laptop is connected to mains power. I have about 100 CDs that I would like to listen to, but how? I do use Apple Music and Spotify, but my CD collection is important to me. This is why I bought the external player.
My Apple dvd writer worked fine on previous iOS systems, where the desktop and finder both showed the icon for the writer. Finder showed the eject icon if a disk was in. Right click on desktop icon showed eject icon,
Now, once a cd or dvd is inserted, top left menu bar shows "DVD player" BUT ONLY if the player content is on the screen. If anything else is on the desktop--like this support page--"DVD player" does not show. To eject the disc, the "DVD player" menu item must show. Then, under Controls (which shows only if "DVD player" shows) the "Eject disc" menu item shows. This appears to work.
I looked under System preferences, and if a cd or dvd is in the drive, it will show "cd/dvd" open that and there is the choice of "Show eject button in menu bar." The button shows, but it doesn't work. Click on it, and it shows "No drives."
When I connected the Apple dvd writer last night, nothing showed, and I thought I would have to buy yet another Apple DVD/CD external drive. There has been quite a bit of help on this forum page, but Apple really should not have created this problem.
I just opened Disc Utility, which appeared automatically after I inserted a blank disc. Selected 'Burn disc.' Dragged the dvd file to the icon and it burned just fine. When complete the DVD image with the title showed on the desktop. Clicking that icon and selecting Eject disc worked. I have another comment further down on this thread that details all my experiments and trials. I eventually found solutions for everything. It's a pain, and definitely not friendly.
That is the exact issue I have on my MacBook Pro. It won't take a CD. It appears to need power but when connected to my iMac it doesn't. Perhaps it's the USB-C to USB adapter I'm using? I will try tech support.
I spoke with Apple support and unfortunately was told that my Super Driver is not compatible with my MacBook Pro. She also said that Apple is not offering any drive to replace, etc. One must look to third party sources!
I have the same problem. Listed in Hardware / USB . When switching USB-C port , Toast saw the external drive for a while, and no more. Of course, the same drive (a new SUS ZenDrive V1M (SDRW-08V1M-U)) is perfectly recognised by a Windows PC. Booting in safe mode (have a MacBook Pro M2 with Monterey 12.4) didn't solve.
I just bought today a brand-new Asus ZenDrive V1M (SDRW-08V1M-U) which is, of course, Mac compatible. It's a 2022 product. Same problem. On windows it works flawlessly . I don't know if it would make sense to buy a USB A to USB-c female cable and try to connect the dvd writer to the hub connected to USB-C of Macbook (Pro M2) and see if it will be recognised. Just opened a ticket with Asus.
Have external apple CD/DVD drive; won't connect thru USB-C adapter to MacBook pro (new M1 chip) or Mac Mini upgraded to Monterey OS. Anyone else have this issue? notification banner says to plug into USB port on machine; and am doing that thru the USB-A to USB-c multi adaptor but CD player won't work/start up.
Have same problem connecting the Apple CD/DVD external drive with Anker hub adapter to MacBook Pro M1. Screen prompt states that there isn't enough power and to connect the drive's USB cable directly into the computer's USB-C port. Can't connect directly as the old USB cable is permanently attached to the external drive. How do you get the additional power and connect without an adapter?
