Still slow going, but I'm getting into the story a little more.
I'm enjoying the description of Prohibition and Depression-era
Chicago, a very rough time and place by all accounts.
A sad scene when they took Georgie to the institution. This seemed to
lessen Grandma Lausch's authority quite a bit--like all bullies, she
overplayed her hand and lost much of her power. She's in a home now
herself...I wonder if we'll hear more about her?
I'm especially liking the developing relationship between Augie and
Einhorn. Einhorn seems to be a mentor to Augie, but it's kind of up in
the air if that's good or bad. A lot of shady dealings with Einhorn,
but Einhorn lets him have it about the robbery Augie participates in.
Augie already doesn't seem to have much of a stomach for crime, so I
hope his experience and Einhorn's lecture will keep him away from that
life.
Augie strikes me so far as a little shiftless, but not a bad kid. I'm
curious to see where he goes with his life now that he's out of high
school.
