I just received the results of my duolingo english test, I read plenty of reddit posts about how easily the test wouldn't get certified, that it was a scam, etc... so I thought of writting a post myself with my quite positive experience!
I wouldn't say I was prepared at all to do the exam. I did one practice test two moths ago and another one 1 week before the actual exam, on both of them I got 115-130 . I wouldn't say I'm too confident on my english either, my writting is okay but I speak really weird and I have a lot of strange mannerism that come from my native language, but I do think I can put the little "bilingual" pin on my favorite jacket, nowadays I speak more english than my actual mother tongue.
The test itself was a little bit of a mess, I accidentally skipped one "read this sentence out loud"; in some of the "describe the picture" I barely wrote anything, I kept going back and forth with what would be the best answer; I mega cooked it on the last "talk about this topic" thingy (the one they send to the universities), I generally can't keep a straight train of thought when I'm talking and I was just all over the place, at some point I remember saying "okay, I'm going to start again" and so I did, I started speaking right from the beginning, everything is recorded and I'm deeply embarrassed.
I talked to myself out loud in english during to whole test, I tend to do this on a daily basis, it helps me concentrate. It might have been one of the reasons I got it certified because god... I was using my friends mac since my laptop doesn't have a camera and I have no idea how anything created by apple works. I thought I closed all the programs but at least spotify, mozilla and chorme were running in the background (my friend told me about it when he came back home), I also kept looking up during the speaking part multiple times (at least 4), I did correct it as soon as I noticed, but still... I thought I would have to do the test again but, here I am! I got it certified :)
I think Duolingo may have just become useless to me? I've studied a couple of languages extensively and use Duolingo primarily as a practice tool for Spanish, French, and Russian when I'm not actively taking classes or part of a speaking club. Yesterday's update to the Spanish and French courses does not allow any testing out on the new lessons. No little key. I usually use desktop but I checked the app (iOS) as well. Still no little key.
Hello everyone! I recently took the DET (Duolingo English Test) last week and scored 150/160. I wanted to share my experience here, as it might benefit others in the future. Before registering for the test, I had read previous experiences shared on Reddit as well.
My preparation was relatively brief. I completed three practice tests and then took the actual test, all within a 24-hour span. Actually took the test during my normal sleeping hours to just get over with it. Lol. My practice test scores were in the 110 - 145 range, which left me feeling quite relaxed, considering that I needed a minimum score of 85+ for my purpose. I found the practice tests to be highly beneficial. They closely resembled the actual test, albeit with the actual test being slightly longer.
I strongly recommend test takers to primarily focus on these practice tests to identify their weaknesses and then address them by watching specific instructional videos on YouTube. Personally, I spent time improving my 'describe a picture' skills, and I found valuable strategies on YouTube for handling this section effectively. For the speaking section, I was uncertain about the quality expectations, so I also sought strategies for structuring my responses.
Apart from focusing on the weaknesses, I also strongly recommend watching Teacher Luke's Understand Duolingo English Test video to get an overall understanding of the test, expectations and strategies. It's a single video that covers all question types.
During the test, I ensured proper lighting in the room, considering that it was late night on my side. I had three lights on. I unplugged my second monitor. I was using a Bluetooth connected keyboard and mouse. Also note that my internet wasn't the fastest and I was using my laptop's crap web camera and microphone. However, I faced no problems in setting up my test. I did have to close all my messenger apps and browsers so beware of this and save any important stuff before you are getting set to start the test.
I feel like my typing proficiency played an important role in my performance, as I maintained a consistent focus on the monitor. I was particularly conscious of not jeopardizing the certification of my test. If you are a slow typer, you should first practice getting a good typing speed. There are websites where you can practice your typing for free.
One aspect I wish I had known beforehand is that Duolingo stores and shares the image used for verification on the certificate. Unfortunately, this resulted in an image I'd rather not share publicly on my LinkedIn profile. As I mentioned earlier, I took the exam late at night before going to bed, so I appear quite shabby in my test photo. I wonder if there's a way to change the image on the certificate. Duolingo please add a message box or something to let the user know about this before starting the test.

Following the exam there will be an interview portion that will ask you to respond to various prompts in 30 to 90 seconds. The exam will take about 45 minutes to complete, and you will need either a passport, driver license, or national or state ID to show the camera. The score results are generally received within a few days of exam completion.
For Admission to Bachelor and Associate Degree Programs, applicants whose education is from an English-medium secondary or post-secondary institution in certain countries (see below) are exempt from the standardized English proficiency testing requirement.
Please have the testing agency send official test scores directly to YSU if they are required for your program of interest (GRE, GMAT, MAT, TOEFL, IELTS, etc.). The institution code is 1975. Unofficial test scores cannot be used for admission purposes.
* Applicants for undergraduate programs who completed high school or at least 24 semester credit hours (one year of full-time study) and graduate applicants who have completed a degree in certain countries are not required to submit a standardized test score demonstrating English language proficiency.
International transfer applicants for autumn quarter are required to have official test scores sent to the UW from any TOEFL, IELTS, or DET taken on or before February 15 of the year of application.
List the UW as a score recipient when you register for the exam so official scores will be sent from the testing agency to the UW as soon as they become available. We will accept all test scores from exams taken on or before February 15 of the year of application as meeting the deadline.
The UW must receive your official TOEFL or IELTS scores directly from the testing agency. You may request scores be sent to the UW at the time you register for the test. If you have already taken the exam, you may request official scores by contacting TOEFL or IELTS directly. Scores should be sent to the UW electronically.
We strongly recommend you plan ahead and register early for a TOEFL or IELTS exam or register to take the Duolingo English Test which offers an online English proficiency exam. We will not consider exams taken after February 15. Test centers fill up quickly and space is limited. If a test date or center is full, keep checking the test site since space may open up when other students cancel. Plan ahead so you can take the test well before the deadline.
For international graduate applicants, the University of Houston Graduate School has approved the Duolingo English Test for English proficiency exams. Duolingo English Tests are valid for two years from the date the test was taken.
We highly recommend that international applicants for whom English is not a first language or a primary language spoken at home submit the results of an English proficiency test. At this time, we accept results for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), and the Duolingo English Test. We will also accept the TOEFL IBT Home Edition. Please arrange for Brown to receive the official results. A minimum score of 105 on the TOEFL internet-based exam, a minimum score of 8.0 on the IELTS, or a minimum score of 130 on the Duolingo is expected in most cases. We do not currently accept the IELTS Indicator Examination.
Trinity does not have minimum score cutoff requirements for any exam. We use a holistic review process which includes other materials such as essays, writing samples, and interviews to evaluate English proficiency. Applicants whose test scores fall outside the ranges below are still encouraged to apply. We strongly encourage all applicants to interview to share more about themselves and further demonstrate their English proficiency.
Applicants are required to submit official English test scores. Duolingo English Test results are only accepted directly from Duolingo. IELTS or TOEFL results may be sent from the testing agency or verified and sent directly to the Admissions Office by a school official. The code to send TOEFL scores to Trinity College is 3899.
