This year the theme for Music In Our Schools Month (MIOSM) is the same as last year: "Music: The Sound of My Heart". I have been doing a "musical March madness"-style song bracket, where students listen to different songs each day and vote on their favorites, for several years now, and last year's bracket focused on songs from various genres with the word "love" in the title (it was a huge success- see last year's bracket here if you haven't seen it yet). Although the theme is the same I wanted to do something different for our song bracket, and I'm really excited about the new direction I'll be taking!

As I did last year, I'm going to be setting up google slides files with the songs for each day embedded in the slides so that classes can vote in their homerooms. If you want to see how I organize the logistics so classes can vote every day regardless of whether they have music that day or not, check out last year's post (and definitely let me know if you have any questions, I'm happy to help). Doing it in slides was such an easy way to have all the songs organized and make it easy for the homeroom teachers to report their class' vote rather than having to email me every day!

I wanted to change up the music, though, while still tying into the theme. So this year I chose all instrumental music that evoke a broad spectrum of moods, and I'm asking students to vote on which song "speaks to their heart" more. I'm also tying this into our social-emotional learning curriculum and giving homeroom teachers some options for discussing the emotions of the music with their students if they have the time/ want to tie it in (you can see those in the slides linked below). I'm really excited about this because it has definitely been an emotionally turbulent time these last few months especially! Here are the songs I'll be using this year (in no particular order):

Essentially, March Music Madness operates in the same way as March Madness (College Basketball)--substituting songs from the target cultures for collegiate basketball teams. A bracket is created (see below for advice on this), and then songs are paired up in matches, tournament-style, until an eventual winner is chosen.

I sent out a survey to some of the teachers that I know have implemented MMM for at least several years to find out how they create their brackets and what they do with the songs in each round. I'll be adding more responses as they filter in, so please check back for more. You can also find all of the resources that they shared with me on this pinboard:

You're in luck. Sidespin, a kinja blog that describes themselves as "a bad place full of jerks" have introduced a full bracket of 64 godawful songs released since 1990 in four delightfully named divisions: Queefcore, Nu-Metal, Justice Stewart, and Tweens and Teens.

The bracket's creators, @raspuntinmethod and @nss_ds on Twitter, have also introduced a drawn out way of voting and reporting on the results. The first round is almost closed, but more hilarity should ensue in as we move down the bracket. They also post updates via @worstsongbracke.

I had the same problem with mine and decided to design and 3D print a replacement. I salvaged the original brass inserts and pressed them I to my printed bracket with a soldering iron. Works perfectly. If you still need the part, I can get you the stl file so you can print your own. My design does not have the spring tabs for mounting the LED brake lights--I only needed the front bracket. However, it might be possible to use my part for the rear bracket if you are willing to attach the LED board with some foam double-sided tape, or adhesive. Let me know it you want me to post the file. Cheers.

The NCAA men's basketball tournament is seeded with plenty of the usual suspects, but every year there are new mascots, school colors and fight songs to learn too. Whether you are filling out a bracket and need to find inspiration in the team's traditions or want to know who might be rooting along with you in America, we've researched each school in the tournament to give you all the information at hand, organized by region and seeds, as you'd find them on your Tournament Challenge entry.

Information was scoured from public sources, and some (including student enrollment numbers) might be slightly out of date. But we figure that's OK. We put as much effort into vetting this as you're putting into filling out your bracket. We also apologize in advance if we left off your favorite actor/athlete/politician/relative from the list of notable alumni. It was (probably) unintentional, and there's nothing to read into it. Frankly, for some schools, we had to stretch the definition of notable. But we had fun with this, and we hope you do, too. Go Billikens! Whatever the heck those are.
